Hate and unconstitutional thinking taking over

I know, nobody wants to talk about politics and that‘s not what I‘m here to do.
There was a pretty defining vote in one of the Bundesländer of Germany and the results are… Well, today I am ashamed to be German.

I do not get why people vote for a party that is officially deemed "right-wing extremist“ and wants to destroy the pillars of democracy for personal profits and ideologies.
Sorry to dampen the mood, but as someone that needs the world to stay open minded, I worry. I cried this morning and I fear for the future. My sense of justice screams for me to get away while I am to start my six years of university soon. The future seems to be a Germany where I do not want to live and right now I honestly do not know what to do.

How do you deal with the world getting more hateful and narrow-minded? What helps you to see things in perspective (preferably a perspective that doesn‘t make me weep)?

  • Obviously, bigoted and racist people vote for Far Right parties. However it seems that many non-extremist people are also doing so out of frustration with the political status quo. Unfortunately, they seem to be too stupid to realise that they are voting for something far, far worse.

  • Our mainstream media tried to cover the stupidity of this party so desperately but some people just don‘t get it. It‘s not just their values and horrible goals, but also stuff like having a 2 billion euro gap in their budget plan…

  • I think that while Reform were very fringe they could get away with promising the moon on a stick, but once they became a serious threat the media, very belatedly, started asking them serious questions and expecting reasoned replies, like they would with any real political party (Reform is a private company rather than a conventionally organised party). They seldom got or get reasoned replies, or any indication of the existence of any rational set of real-world policies. Some parts of the media also did a little digging and came up with all the serious financial criminality that is now common knowledge..

  • I think most people have lived through all this before, from Thatcher onwards and wold know it dosen't work by now and the rich just get richer.

  • One of the things thats always confused me, is that people believe a bunch of self serving multimillionaire business people are going to do anything substantive to improve the lives of ordinary people.
Okay, so to quickly explain why someone would believe that (and the reality of it), I had Google’s AI sum up the definition of “trickle down economics” [WARNING: Usage of AI]
    “Core Principles
    • Supply-Side Focus: Proponents argue that reducing taxes and government regulations encourages businesses to produce more and invest capital.
    • Reinvestment: The core idea is that extra money kept by high earners will be used to build factories, fund new businesses, and hire workers.
    • Historical Links: The term is most famously associated with Reaganomics in the 1980s under President Ronald Reagan, as well as earlier policies under President Herbert Hoover.
    Criticisms and Reality
    • Widening Inequality: Critics point out that wealth often stays concentrated at the top rather than flowing down, as the rich tend to save or accumulate assets rather than spend locally.
    • Lack of Empirical Support: Numerous economic studies show that cutting top tax rates fails to significantly boost job creation, hourly wages, or overall broad-based economic growth.
    • Derogatory Usage: Economists note that "trickle-down" is rarely used as a self-descriptor; it is typically used by critics to highlight policies they argue exacerbate income inequality.”
