Coping with weekly shopping trip - older people

Having coped quite well at home with the heat, I'm starting to find it exhausting doing the weekly shop. I try to arrange things so I don't visit more than 5 shops. I always take a hat and cold drink and sometimes a sandwich.

How do you cope with shopping, in this heat?

  • We don't have much in the way of garden centres anymore sadly, I love a garden centrre and always seek out the "rescue plants", I've had some really good bargains, often perenials that are at the end of their season, but will come back next year. I bought a sad looking patio rose for a pound, gave it a good soak and repotted it, now it tripled in size and produces lovely red flowers over a long season, what a bargain!.

Many of our charity shops have closed down now, I used to love going round the charity shops, but now the ones that are left all seem to be rubbish, the clothes are horrible, they have hardly any books, apparently people don't read books anymore. A couple of our supermarkets have book tables and the turnover is huge, I took a bag of books there on a range of subjects and they'd all gone within three days. So many charity shops send donations to other places, they decide what people want and its always rubbish here and often expensive rubbish too and they've taken to selling loads of new items too, half of one of the big shops is now new stuff, apart from socks it all sits there for months as nobody wants it.

  • I go to 4 or 5 shops as its the only way I can get the things I want to eat and in many cases can eat.

That's why I go to several shops.

  • I used to really enjoy garden centre/plant nursery shopping and sometimes charity shops.

Yes, I enjoy both of those, but have to limit what I spend. It's nice to get something pre loved from a charity shop/

  • Yes, I might go back to deliveries especially as the cost has come down. But I do like shopping as long as there is not a lot to buy.

  • We have the groceries delivered. If I need to visit a shop I get there for 9:00 in the morning and get back home as quickly as possible, to avoid being out in the hottest part of the day.

  • I don't cope with shopping very well and not having a car we have used online shopping for well over 20 years. My partner is the happy shopper and tops up things we forget to order, etc. I used to really enjoy garden centre/plant nursery shopping and sometimes charity shops.

  • Our Co-Op isn't very good, not very big, more like a high st corner shop than a supermarket and the one in Llanfair PG, is terrible all they seem to sell is biscuits and booze.

I go to 4 or 5 shops as its the only way I can get the things I want to eat and in many cases can eat. I see myself as time rich and cash poor, and shopping around gives me the opportunity for a slightly better lifestyle.

We don't have a sainsbury's and ocado don't come over the bridge to Anglesey, I did look at having shopping delivered, but found that I was only allowed small packs of things like pasta and rice and not the cheaper large sizes I buy rice in 10KG bags and pasta in 3KG packs. I also wouldn't trust anyone else to get me the right stuff anyway, the algorthingies that staff have to follow won't let them swap one type of veggie sausage for another and give you meat ones instead, if I picked no exchanges I'd probably end up with about 3 things delivered. Lack of stock is one reason I have to shop around so much.

  • I believe the co-op is good for some things that other supermarkets don’t stock.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a branch near me, the Spar would be my nearest local.

  • I only really go to the supermarket, I like to look at the yellow sticker items and get things I can freeze. I tend to go late evening, there is no music playing or announcements, the shop is usually quite devoid of people. I’ve done Christmas shopping in the early hours before, no Christmas music on loop and half the lights are normally turned off. I don’t think I’ve ever visited 5 shops in one day.

  • Online re Sainsbury's, Ocado (just started) and Amazon.

    There are others.

I dislike shopping but I do use my corner of the road Tesco for odds and sods.

  • Online mainly…and local co-op for bits in between

  • Shopping can be exhausting at the best of times. I rarely go to shops at any time, and definitely not in the heat.

I order groceries online and they are delivered. The same goes for most of my clothes and other things.
