My childhood consisted of Laurel & Hardy, Abbot & Costello and Harold Lloyd. There was most probably at least one of them on every evening. They were old films then, but I never tired of watching them.
There's a brilliant Neil Sedaka song called Betty Grable, it was about seeing her at the Saturday morning pictures, I went to the pictures every Saturday morning.
My favourite animated films are the Asterix ones, not the American one though as they changed all the names and made it less funny.
My favourite comfort movies are The Princess Bride and The little shop of horrors. The last film I saw was Blazing Saddles which is very silly but it's not to everyones taste.
I think the last one I saw a the cinema was Together which is a weird horror/romance type thing but I found it fairly enjoyable.
Favourite animation is probably The Incredibles or Spirited Away.
I do like a good monster movie like The Thing (1982) or Alien/s.
If pressed I probably say that The Sawshank Redemption has to be near the top of my list along with Field of dreams (although I tend to sob through parts of it). An honourable mention my go to What's eating Gilbert Grape.
When I was much younger I used to go to the cinema a couple of times a week or more, loved the escapism.
This may sound weird but if I can't empathise with the characters I just switch off, even if it has a decent plot I just find I'm not interested, I started to watch the new Leonardo DiCaprio film and I had to turned it off after 20 minutes.
I'm not huge into martial arts movies. There's one spoof that I thought was hilarious called Kung-Pao: Enter the Fist. It's literally just one guy dubbing over an old movie while inserting new footage of himself into it and it is HILARIOUS
The Matrix movies are so good!!
YES!! I LOOOOOVE GHIBLI MOVIES!!! Especially Miyazaki's works from the 80s!
May favourite films are usually comedies and animated films. Uh... lessee here.... Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, The World's End, Hot Fuzz, Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions: Take On Me, Kiki's Delivery Service, Dragon Ball: The Path To Power, Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Transformers The Movie (1986)
Thanks! Sounds like it'll be good I'll have to try watch it
It's really good! It's about arich man named Mr Darcy who is quite stern and a poor family whose parents are trying to marry the daughters off to rich husbands. I'd recommend it but idk about the other adaptations other than the 2005, and 90s tv show version.
All the Harry potters are good!
I've never read or seen pride and prejudice what's it like?
Thank you for explaining, I misunderstood your use of the word bed thinking it meant bad in horrific sense not bad as “so badly written/produced/ acted as to funny.
I've been really into 2005 Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and The Sound of Music recently.
I didn't like Alien either, or most other horror films, good but funny horror films aren't really horror, they use things like zombies or aliens as part of an often quite surreal plot and it was funny watching actors like Richard Briars and Honor Blackman fighting zombies from thier retirement home and ending up as hero's. Most of the plots are just totally silly and are funny because the actors behave like real people when confronted with something mad.
I don't enjoy psychological or supernatural thrillers and all the ones where someone goes upstairs or into the basement when theres something weird happening, psychological ones are often too realistic, supernatural ones I have to much imagination for and the ones were people end up mangled and screaming just bore me, I think FFS just get out of the house you stupid person!
Some of my other favourite films are,
Kung Fu Hustle
Arsenic and Old Lace
Sin City
300
47 Ronin
A few of the ones that I love and return to:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Withnail and I
The Matrix
Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger
This is Spinal Tap
Apocalypse Now
Twelve Angry Men
I love the (Original) Italian Job, especially the full mini car chase... oh and the famous line (You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!) So funny
If pushed I would say my all time favourites are: Tarkovky’s Solaris, Blade Runner (Directors Cut), Vita and Virginia, and Carrington.
I had a phase of enjoying the excellent movies from and about Eastern Europe such as Cold War, Ida and also the Unbearable Lightness of Being.
I think Sylvia [Plath] is excellent especially as Im deeply into their poetry but am aware the their daughter Frieda detests it and wasn’t I think consulted about its representation of her parents. Interestingly hearing Ted read his Full Moon and Little Frieda on Channel 4 was a key moment where I turned self indulgent scribbles into poetry which ultimately became widely published

Hi CW
Can you explain how you can enjoy horror movies? Im asking seriously as I need to understand personally about a traumatic event in my childhood where I thought I was going to see a regular space opera sci fi but it turned out to be so very damaging to me, something I can never un see, It was Alien, just released, and Id no idea what I was about to experience, even typing this so many years later I feel adrenaline and cortisol surging through my veins. My friends didn’t have the same reactions and enjoyed it, but I was there, in the cabin with the guy on the table about to be chest busted. Guess it was because I related to the characters in a way I never did later with the surrealism of Tarrantino.
thanks
Alice
I agree series are good as well, getting to know characters are really good! I find films I can make character stories up on what happens after the film or party if what happened before!
