Films

What Films do people enjoy watching / have seen recently?

I enjoy The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, KPop Demon Hunters

I have seen The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

  • My all time favourites - all very old:

    The Apartment  - 1960

Some Like it Hot - 1959

    The Graduate - 1967

    The Duellists - 1977

Kind Hearts and Coronets - 1949

  • If pushed I would say my all time favourites are: Tarkovky’s Solaris, Blade Runner (Directors Cut), Vita and Virginia, and Carrington.

I had a phase of enjoying the excellent movies from and about Eastern Europe such as Cold War, Ida and also the Unbearable Lightness of Being.

I think Sylvia [Plath] is excellent especially as Im deeply into their poetry but am aware the their daughter Frieda detests it and wasn’t I think consulted about its representation of her parents. Interestingly hearing  Ted read his Full Moon and Little Frieda on Channel 4 was a key moment where I turned self indulgent scribbles into poetry which ultimately became widely published

  • Hi CW

Can you explain how you can enjoy horror movies? Im asking seriously as I need to understand personally about a traumatic event in my childhood where I thought I was going to see a regular space opera sci fi but it turned out to be so very damaging to me, something I can never un see, It was Alien, just released, and Id no idea what I was about to experience, even typing this so many years later I feel adrenaline and cortisol surging through my veins. My friends didn’t have the same reactions and enjoyed it, but I was there, in the cabin with the guy on the table about to be chest busted. Guess it was because I related to the characters in a way I never did later with the surrealism of Tarrantino.

    thanks

  • And of course Tonari no Totoro! Pompoko ended up being very popular with the kids with all the transforming. I like the quieter ones too,  like Whispers of the heart and Up on Poppy hill.

I do agree with TheCatWoman, I can watch a horror film that's meant to be funny, like Shaun of the Dead or Attack the blok, I can handle that.

I've watched a lot of anime films too, mainly as my dad kept buying them for us, but I do like animation and the different things you can do in the medium to traditional film. (Mirai, Your Name, Tekkonkinkreet etc.)

  • I agree series are good as well, getting to know characters are really good! I find films I can make character stories up on what happens after the film or party if what happened before!

  • I've seen some Ghibli films as well!

    Spirited away

    Howls moving castle

    Princess mononoke

    Kiwis delivery service

    Disney films are good

  • I rarely watch films, I prefer a series where you get to know the characters.

I do like a good martial arts film like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

I like really bad horror films like Attack the Block, Dog Soldiers and Cockney's vs Zombies.

I do love Gladiator too, I've not seen the new one though, I'm not sure if I want too?

  • I love studio Ghibli films, any really, especially Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle (I went and read that last year as I hadn't as a child). Princess Mononoke was the first I saw.

Enjoy Pixar movies too but less keen on all the sequels since the Disney take over.

I've been waiting for my son to read Lord of the Rings, but he's resisted me so far, as I was hoping he would read it before we watched it with him. (He could do it in a couple of weeks at his reading speed if he chose to). I don't know if I've watched it since the original cinema release and then once on dvd. I did dress as an elf to go see it at 17.

I'm not always drawn to watch films, but I do enjoy it when we do. I enjoy an interesting story, I can't watch horror and not so bothered about effects films.
