Share ideas for making Christmas cheery and less onerous for singletons

Some of us like being alone at Christmas - many dread this time of year. Any singletons share how they make Christmas a good experience?

Mine

1. enjoy looking at decorations in shops, looking at others' ideas on line - then choosing my decorations

2. find pleasure tidying my home

3. finding and taking nice things to charity shops and food bank

4. making things ahead, like mincemeat, sloe gin, cranberry sauce

5. reminding myself how lucky I am to live in a warm, safe home with many resources

  • Ahh ok. I will have to have a look out for them myself as I am curious as to see what they look like. My mum picked up for fake candy canes for me as well as some silver baubles. I might start putting the big tree up in a bit actually but I think I’ll need more decs lol! I actually think it’s quite nice to see more Xmas decs and lights up now instead of Halloween.

  • I saw some lovely balls in Home Bargains yesterday, they were like those coloured glass balls in a string net you get in maritime themed pubs. Unfortunatley they only came in a a big box with other stuff I didn't want.

I did see a load of baubles in the shape of food mixers and other kitchen equipment, I didn't understand that at all.

  • I’m single but I actually really enjoy Christmas. I love seeing all the twinkling lights, listening to all the music and I also tend to watch more Christmas films or episodes of the Simpsons or spongebob. I also find the racetrack Merry Mountain on Mario kart to be even more fun and special (though I always love that track either way). I also love playing acnh on Christmas Eve and decorating my island before. And of course I love the mystery of what presents I get. Even if it’s just something small, it’s the excitement and mystery, like I’m still living my childhood dreams. Also my birthday is not long before Christmas so it’s kind of like two Xmas for me.

Love your decorations by the way!

  • I enjoy a film fest at Christmas. I have the Inspector Morse and Sherlock Holmes collections, also enjoy watching old TV programmes on i-player.

  • That sounds lovely!.

I like to get absorbed in drawing or just being out in nature, and that helps me cope with everything.

Baking with music sounds like such a nice way to spend the day and spread a bit of cheer.

  • Now that is my idea of xmas! To me it is just the 25th of December and I treat it like any other day and ignore all the mad rush around me.

  • It is a tradition to feed a cake in this way. Trouble is, the temptation to 'feed yourself' with brandy at the same time Joy. My granny used to make Christmas pudding in January to 'age' it. Also, putting silver coins and other tokens inside - unlucky if you happened to break a tooth on one.

  • My most enjoyable xmas alone was spent researching my disertation, me a cat and a pile of books, perfect.

  • Hi I'm single and Christmas is a pretty hard time of year really. I see my siblings with their partners and kids and it can be a sad reminder that nothing like that is in my life.

I love your list! It's good to remind yourself how lucky you are to live in a warm safe place, I do this too and it always helps. I also take toys to my local children's hospital in December, something I enjoy doing to help out and spread some cheer.

Something I also do that you may enjoy is Christmas baking! I like to make Christmas puddings, Christmas fairy cakes and gingerbread men. I'm not very hungry at all (Something I'm working on) so I usually end up giving them to my family or donating them at the bakery. I really enjoy baking and this time of year, with Christmas music playing quietly, I get to baking and that's one thing that helps get me through Blush

  • Great thread!!

I'm looking forward to reading what people have to say.

I can add one tiny thing.

When I was part of a running club some of the ladies there used to make a fruit cake in November and then talk about feeding it slowly with alcohol ready for Christmas.

    It seemed like a tradition.

  • I'm not single, but me and my partner don't see anyone else at Christmas. We buy our favourite foods and drinks, allocate some money to each choose gifts we want, and line up some good movies to watch.
