Halloween

Ok so I have decided I’ll stick around a little longer but will probably take a break from here soon. For now though I’ll post about Halloween! Jack o lantern

Ok so I’m not a lover of the event if I’m honest but as I’ve got older I have somewhat got into it a little bit more. Now I’m in my flat I don’t have to worry about the trick or treaters lol! Think my mum is going to come around to mine as well to avoid them lol!

How am I going to celebrate it? I will no doubt be playing Luigi’s mansion 3, hopefully the last level on Simpsons hit and run and of course play ACNH Halloween event despite the fact I only have five villagers on my island right now and like one pumpkin decoration on the island (I only started the island on the 10th lol). Might also watch some SpongeBob episodes which are Halloween themed too. The only decorations in my flat are two little light up metal pumpkins which once had Halloween shortbreads in. But I ate them! I can’t get over how much effort people have actually gone into decorating their houses and front yards though. Do hope this doesn’t take over Christmas ha!

So what you do plan for Halloween? Do you like it? Do you not care for it? Feel free to let me know!

  • Aww I’m sorry you didn’t feel well but at least you tried and that’s great! Sometimes I think Halloween in November isn’t always the same. I’m gonna try and get into the Xmas spirit now

  • Thank you I’m not the only one who thinks this. I mean I wasn’t around in the 80s but now I do feel that we have got more like America when it comes to the decs. I mean I’ll be honest it actually depresses me that more effort goes into Halloween than Christmas which is meant to be a fun and jolly time of year. Religious or not. Say I think the idea of making costumes and using the make up is good idea. Now it’s like walking on Halloween strictly!

  • Sadly as I had to go out suddenly I missed the trick or treats last night today I went to a late Halloween party with my dog at my local autism hub. It was ok left early because I wasn’t feeling well but I tried to get into the Halloween spirt.

  • I liked Halloween when I was young. I used to go to parties hosted by a couple of friends and we'd wear improvised costumes and do gothy make-up and it was fun. That was back in the 80s. But I've gone off it since its become Americanised with trick or treating.

  • I keep hearing the fireworks but I can’t see them which is a pain ha! I do love the colours though. I hope there will be more visible ones over the next few days but say the weather has been quite bad for me lately as well.

  • We had a few fireworks early on in the evening but I think the weather got to bad, it sounded like someone was throwing buckets of gravel at my windows last night.

it's often said that The Wild Hunt rides at Samhain, last night I could beiieve it!

  • I think I prefer your version of Halloween tbh! I mean I like the idea of getting creative and saving money lol. Plus you can say you made the outfit yourself! Halloween is more of a money grabber now

  • I feel like it was more of a big deal for me when my brother and I were little as I do think it's more exciting for kids (and maybe 50% adults) in the UK. Don’t get me wrong, I do still like it to a certain degree, it's just what I hate now is the idea of me being potentially invited to a party meaning everybody will go to full length to make a proper effort with costumes. But the thing is, I hate the idea of having to spend god knows how much amount money on a costume which does look amazing but then you'd just put in your wardrobe and potentially never wear again.

I guess that's where it comes to my social anxiety aspect as I always feel nervous about getting invited to an actual party where I'm expected to make the full effort in dressing up, where is in past years I've been happy with just improvising with stuff already in my wardrobe and added a few halloween accessories that way I've made a bit of effort without having to spend a ridiculous amount of cash.

Anyways that's just my opinion on Halloween... I do still like it but it's not the same as it was when I was a child

  • Oh wow that sounds like very Halloween weather! I actually saw loads of fireworks last night. Wonder if there’ll be loads on the 5th. I mean that is ironically the quiet day for fireworks where I live lol

  • it’s not strange at all and I completely agree with you there! Especially how well bratty the majority of kids are these days! I agree I do think trick or treating should be banned, there are other ways to have fun! Well we can rest easy for another year!

  • I dread it for several days beforehand. I'm pleased it is over for another year. I'm finding it hard to stay asleep tonight.

I don't like the whole concept of threatening people to get sweets. It seems like extortion to me. I don't think it's a good message.

I also didn't see how you could trust strangers. Going up to houses seemed risky, plus how do you know they haven't poisoned the sweets. This has happened, and one year a load of drugged ones were given out.

When I was little you didn't have it, then it got imported. People didn't dress up , then youths started doing it. I remember one person getting killed after an argument. Then the rules were explained this was for little kids and you are supposed to go to places that are participating locally, e.g. by putting out a pumpkin or something, not going all over the place and menacing old people.

I heard of some getting carrier bags worth of stuff. Rather than take a few sweets they take the whole lot.

Insurance claims also go up. I would probably ban trick or treat.. If people want to do something, go to to fancy dress parties.

I know people think I have a strange interpretation.

  • Its been a wild night here, with howling winds, heavy rain, hail an thunder and lightening

  • Ok well I think trick or treat is done for this year! I failed to complete Simpsons hit and run within the week but I’ve been busier this year compared to last year so yeah. Also think it’s safe to say that me and my mum got tricked at Mc D tonight as we ordered 9 mc nuggets and 5 selects and though the order was technically correct, instead of plain mc nuggets we got pepper ones but still enjoyed regardless! Gonna chill playing the Halloween event on crossing now.

Im gonna be taking that break I mentioned now but I’m available for private messages.

  • Well I managed to complete Luigi’s mansion 3 this morning when I couldn’t sleep so now I’ll probably play Mario kart world with my downton abbey Yoshi

  • Yeah I don’t really see the need for all the decorations myself. I mean I have my metal pumpkins and I decorate my island on acnh to some extent but I do think Halloween is just more of a fancy dress party and kids wanting sweets. I much prefer Christmas if I’m honest as I just find it more of a cheerful thing and not as well creepy lol! As I said I “celebrate” Halloween by playing my games but I tend to play them no matter what year anyway haha!

  • The Celtic origins of Halloween are interesting and I love horror (particularly folk horror) and scary stories etc. As the days get shorter and leaves fall, it is the perfect time of year for all that.

All the imported American crap of trick or treating, plastic orange tat outside your house and the stupid decoration, is vulgar and uninteresting. I want nothing to do with any of it.

  • Aww well I hope your friend gets better and I’m sure you visiting them will cheer them up.

Wow I didn’t even know that’s why cathrine wheels are named like that, I always just thought the fireworks were very nice to look at. I can understand what you are saying about the banging though. When I was little I always used to be so scared of the bangs but now I actually don’t mind them.

Yeah a lot of people seem to go out and buy things for Halloween now but I personally would actually enjoy making them myself but I suppose that’s me being crafty.

  • I don’t usually do anything differently at Halloween.

When I was growing up, we used to carve lanterns out of turnips and we wore witches hats and made scary face masks from paper plates. We sometimes had fireworks and sparklers. I didn’t like and still don’t like the noise of rockets—I preferred the quieter Catherine Wheels (named after Catherine of Sienna who was executed on a wheel). Since learning of the Catherine Wheel’s grisly origin, I am less keen, although clearly the intention of the people who enjoy them is not one of  celebration of her demise in such a horrific manner.

This Friday, I am driving to Dublin to visit a friend who hasn’t been well. I might do a detour to visit Tlachtga, the birthplace of Halloween.

  • I get that. Say all I have are two little mettle pumpkins in my living room window. I wouldn’t go out and buy decorations for Halloween myself but if people buy me Halloween related stuff then keep and add to the collection. I will admit I decorate for Christmas though as I love Christmas. So cozy and twinkly and like all of December is a good time to have those decs up I guess. But I hate taking decorations down!

  • I have to admit that one thing that puts me off from actively embracing Halloween and putting up Halloween decorations, is that it seems a lot of effort to go to for one day of the year. Unless one has the storage space to keep and re-use Halloween decorations, there is the issue of what one does with them when they are taken down, and the expense of buying a load of new decorations just for that one day (evening) in the year.
