Halloween

Ok so I have decided I’ll stick around a little longer but will probably take a break from here soon. For now though I’ll post about Halloween! Jack o lantern

Ok so I’m not a lover of the event if I’m honest but as I’ve got older I have somewhat got into it a little bit more. Now I’m in my flat I don’t have to worry about the trick or treaters lol! Think my mum is going to come around to mine as well to avoid them lol!

How am I going to celebrate it? I will no doubt be playing Luigi’s mansion 3, hopefully the last level on Simpsons hit and run and of course play ACNH Halloween event despite the fact I only have five villagers on my island right now and like one pumpkin decoration on the island (I only started the island on the 10th lol). Might also watch some SpongeBob episodes which are Halloween themed too. The only decorations in my flat are two little light up metal pumpkins which once had Halloween shortbreads in. But I ate them! I can’t get over how much effort people have actually gone into decorating their houses and front yards though. Do hope this doesn’t take over Christmas ha!

So what you do plan for Halloween? Do you like it? Do you not care for it? Feel free to let me know!

  • I enjoyed Halloween when I was a child and remember one or two occasions when I went out Trick or Treating. Times were very different back then, and there wasn't the expectation there seems to be now that one would end up with a pile of treats. Also, one had to be prepared for the possibility that someone might opt for a trick before they handed out a treat. Halloween costumes were nothing like they are now. For example, if one wanted to dress as a witch, the costume would often consist of a black bin bag with holes cut out for one's head and arms, with a shop-bought witches hat.

Now that I am middle-aged with an adult son, I suppose I feel indifferent about Halloween. I don't really get out much, but if I happen to pass homes where people have really made an effort with outdoor Halloween decorations, I do find myself smiling, and thinking how incredible it all looks.

I have been living in my current home for about 25 years, and can probably count on one hand the number of times I've seen trick or treaters in my immediate neighbourhood, or had them calling at my home. I don't bother buying in treats, or making Halloween treats. If I did, there is probably a good chance that me and my son would have difficulty resisting the urge to eat them ourselves.

  • I don’t think I have ever been trick or treating at all to be honest. Say we used to get sweets etc but where I lived growing up was just a small village and it was very quiet so we could get away with having the lights on but when we stopped buying sweets we turned the lights off and Sod’s Law people came so we had to pretend to be out. Since moving up north just before lockdown I think we had one lot of trick or treaters but my parents needed the outside lights on so they could see where they were driving and I wasn’t going to answer whilst I was in the shower lol!

My mum had said that about clothing when she was growing up, she never did it herself but people would just tend to find random materials and dress up, or just wear masks or stickers on their faces hehe. I’ve noticed more houses being decorated for Halloween and I have to admit I do like those light up twinkling cobwebs. But I can imagine all that like fluffy fabric web like stuff to be a nightmare to take down. It’s getting more like Halloween strictly each year lol!

  • I get that. Say all I have are two little mettle pumpkins in my living room window. I wouldn’t go out and buy decorations for Halloween myself but if people buy me Halloween related stuff then keep and add to the collection. I will admit I decorate for Christmas though as I love Christmas. So cozy and twinkly and like all of December is a good time to have those decs up I guess. But I hate taking decorations down!

  • I have to admit that one thing that puts me off from actively embracing Halloween and putting up Halloween decorations, is that it seems a lot of effort to go to for one day of the year. Unless one has the storage space to keep and re-use Halloween decorations, there is the issue of what one does with them when they are taken down, and the expense of buying a load of new decorations just for that one day (evening) in the year.
