How do you dress?

I've often made a few questionable choices with my clothes through the years and have often got it wrong. In the last year or so I've decided to go for comfort over conformity, and I've always been more attracted to bright colours rather than black, grey or beige and the muted tones that seem to be popular these days. I don't want to look like everyone else anymore.

My partner and I recently discovered a shop in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, and they sell all sorts of cool clothes. It's hippie style so there are patchwork trousers, harem pants, and loose shirts and t-shirts, printed designs etc. I absolutely love it and it's what I wear now. I'm happy to be the weird guy wearing the hat, assorted coloured clothes and sandals or barefoot shoes.

What's your style and what do you like wearing?

  • The same every day unless I've got an event that requires a dress code or uniform.

Cargo quick dry walking trousers. It's a very specific type of fabric and it's the only one pretty much.

    The same belt every day.

T-shirt, always in what my grandmother would refer to as 'muddy' colours. Always plain colour with no text or symbols. And then a fleece, generally one of the ones with a 1/4 length zip, but  I have a few without a zip too.

If I need additional layers I have a waterproof coat, winter ski type coat, gilet and zip up fleece, thermals, and some long sleeved tops.

I then also have formal and more formal wear, but other than that it's the same all the time.

  • I'd never heard of cottagecore before, its very pretty, but I think not for me, I'd look like an over coat on a wheelbarrow in most of it and being tall I think most of it would be too short either that or in some of it I'd look like a barrage balloon!

  • I’ve definitely always never had a steady personal “style”, but I’ve gotten to the point that no matter how I dress, even if my goal is to dress up more, I won’t sacrifice my comfort so nothing too form fitting or itchy or just generally uncomfortable. my style these days I’d say is cottagecore… bohoish and I’ve always had more of an “alt” style and have often been told my style is weird or too much, especially as a teen when I was in a heavy emo phase then suddenly came out of that and went into a hugely pink phase. honestly my goal these days is sort of a boho disney princess and that doesn’t seem to the norm but it makes me happy! I love seeing people with more alt or “out there” styles, it brings me such joy and I feel like us autistic folk often dress for our own joy which I think is beautiful smiling face with hearts your style sounds wonderful! I’ve been wanting to try barefoot shoes myself

  • I don't know why it's assumed that women don't want or need pockets, I love pockets and don't want to be weighed down by a bag all the time

  • I don’t have any specific style. My clothes must be comfy, the fabric must feel good, cotton, not plastic, best without or very little decorations. Most of my clothes I have are second hand from someone who is rich. This person saves me from stress that comes with shopping. My mom and husband try to convince me to buy something for myself. They don’t understand how awful shopping feels. And I have anxiety that I wouldn’t be happy with the item I would buy.

  • Yes! Pockets and they are perfect to hide my always stimming fingers and a toy that I touch.

  • My style is goth, my colour is black, infrequently purple. Also New Rock boots which I love. I'm pretty sensitive to differences between the tension in laces and New Rocks make it easy to get them both the same. I wear my socks inside out. Pockets are a must, usually don't really know what to do with my arms when they're not occupied in an activity. So, pockets always.

  • We only have a tiny M&S that's really a food stoe that sells a few clothes, I don't wear t-shirts, I'm not even sure if ours have any. We have one independent clothes shop left in Bangor and I don't know how long they will remain open for, the owners jacked the rent up and everybody moved out and most have either disapeared altogether or have moved online. We've got a Pringles, that sells expensive clothes for very small and elderly people, a New Look which sells rubbish and supermarkets. Oh, and we have a Next that sells very little and is used as a showcase for online orders and a TKMAXX that rarely has anything in my my size.

I used to get a lot of clothes from Lagan Look, but they've got expensive and the quality is now poor, Lotus in the Moonlight no longer sells to the UK as postage is so expensive, Kit and Kaboodle rarely have anything in my length. I think I may end up cutting a hole in the middle of a sheet and a blanket just so as I have something to cover my nakedness when going out soon.

  • Fruit of the Loom T-Shirts and shorts most of the time. Sometimes I’ll wear a hoodie but not very often, I find them a little too tight and the baggy type make me look a bit daft – dafter than usual anyway.

  • I joke with my boys that my wardrobe is a homer Simpson wardrobe. Joy Blue jeans, blue T-shirt and a hoodie that varies, but only comfortable if it's somewhere between blue and black. Joy

  • I have in the past bought a t-shirt from M&S, really liked it, and gone back and bought another one that was identical in the same size. And it fitted totally differently! It was nothing like the size or shape of the first one I bought just a few weeks earlier.

M&S is basically random now for sizing. They get their stuff made really cheap in the far east and it's a total lottery as to whether your usual size will fit.

  • I only wear stripy t-shirts, ideally with shorts. On a really cold winter day I'll wear jeans so people don't laugh, but to be honest I really always want to be in shorts, even if it's snowing.

  • *Literal mode engaged* - Well, first I pull up my pants, then put on a bra, then I pull a t-shirt over my head, then I pull on a skirt or pair of trousers, and if it's cool I then put on a cardigan and a pair of socks.

  • I can’t find anything that fits me properly either. M&S years ago used to sell quality clothes that fitted me. Their T-shirts were made from thicker cotton and they used to last years. Have you seen their T-Shirts this year? You could spit through them! Most of their clothes are poorly cut, badly sewn and made from cheap, thin fabrics.

Recently, I have been buying clothing from small independent shops, going for neutral, classic items that should last for years, but the items are exorbitantly expensive.

There was an article on ‘Which’ Magazine’s website recently that backs up the claim that the quality of clothes from shops like M&S has deteriorated. I am in despair over my wardrobe at the moment too.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. Fashion seemed to take a very unexpected turn somewhere lol. I think people these days buy their stuff from Temu. I get some of my shirts from there,

  • Where do people buy clothes from? I'm almost at my wits end trying to find something that fits. Whats with the eye popping patterns that seem to be everywhere, people must be able to be seen from space!

  • Oh dear I think I must have had a typo!
