How do you dress?

I've often made a few questionable choices with my clothes through the years and have often got it wrong. In the last year or so I've decided to go for comfort over conformity, and I've always been more attracted to bright colours rather than black, grey or beige and the muted tones that seem to be popular these days. I don't want to look like everyone else anymore.

My partner and I recently discovered a shop in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, and they sell all sorts of cool clothes. It's hippie style so there are patchwork trousers, harem pants, and loose shirts and t-shirts, printed designs etc. I absolutely love it and it's what I wear now. I'm happy to be the weird guy wearing the hat, assorted coloured clothes and sandals or barefoot shoes.

What's your style and what do you like wearing?

  • I wear what’s comfortable and what catches my eye, I like dopamine dressing, green is my most favourite colour ever so I wear everything green, then there’s days where I wear all black mainly fitted. I like to be unique

  • I'm quite the opposite. I don't feel comfortable in loose clothes or bright colours. I always wear either a tight black shirt and leggings paired with gosford boots and a long black skirt or just a plain suit and tie. the only times I wear baggy clothes is either when I'm working (I work with animals) or if I'm doing something messy like outside work or painting. formal and funeral-wear are what I'm comfortable in (which has earned me the nickname 'Wednesday Addams' before I even knew about the Addams Family or Wednesday herself)

  • I wear whatever I have that is comfortable and inconspicuous.

For example, now I am wearing grey long johns and a grey jumper.

If I need to go outside, I wear my cotton joggers, dark grey coat, blue woollen hat, and dark grey winter boots. I have raynaud's syndrome so I wear winter gloves all year but summer.

I prefer blue, black or grey. I dislike bright colours.

I remember when a child, my mom had to always remove the inside-labels of shirts but now I rarely notice this.

  • My favourite shoe shop has started selling thier winter boots in purple and teal, if they do a sale before xmas then maybe I could have one pair as a xmas present and then in the spring sales around my birthday I could have another pair as a present and have both colours!

  • Ive seen slot of people lately saying people are tricked by merch but tbh as an autistic person I find merch helps me express my intrests and can even be a way to meet people with similar interests

  • I like baseball caps and I like those flat visor new era style ones too but they tend to mishapr easy and people freak out when I take thr sticker off and say it’s fake I mean A its only a sticker it looks better without and B I don’t care if it is fake

  • I tend to have two modes plain/patern T-shirts is mode one perhaps with a weighted hoody

mode two is band T-shirt and band hoodies and perhaps the odd sports top

i dont like designer labels but if I need  a new shirt for a day I’ll buy them if it’s the cheaper item on the day

In recent years i have tended to prefer one type of shoe and will wear them even when worn down until I can sorce new ones the same

my latest T-shirt I am getting will be a my chemical romance one

  • I stick to soft fabrics and loose fits, tight stuff just feels wrong. I found a couple of comfy pieces from Frox of Falkirk that don’t itch or cling weirdly. I don’t care much about trends, but I do feel better when what I wear doesn’t stress me out. Layers help too, so I can adjust depending on how warm or cold I get, which changes a lot for me.

  • I can't stand wearing hats or cap's, my hair seems to throw them off, they sort of ride up my head until they blow away and I have hat head for ages after taking one off.

  • Another baseball cap pro:

    - Keeps the rain off your glasses (if you're a wearer).

I had to switch from a baseball cap to a boonie hat. Turns out that my baseball cap provided little or no protection from sunlight to the side of my face.

  • I try to avoid bright clothes as my eyes are so sensitive to brightness.

I have recently realised that playing with colours / designs - only on my baseball cap - is the one area which I can comfortably accommodate brightness / bling - as a sort of concession (by that I mean; I appreciate colour / design / embellishments, but I really don't want to see it all the time, myself ...so, if I wear it on my head - generally, I cannot see it myself all that often!).

A baseball cap wins for a range of reasons, including:

    - limits sunlight impact when driving,

    - can still easily wear over the ear hybrid / active noise cancelling headphones, or ear defenders,

    - indoors in commercial premises it helps to mitigate bright overhead lighting,

    - keeps my hair off my face,

    - if I attend an event where I would prefer not to feature in photos showing my face; I say so as I arrive and the baseball cap makes it easier for people taking photos to spot me and wait until I have turned away from their direction,

    - helps to reduce the sun impact on my fussy facial skin (I get adverse reactions to many sunscreen products),

    - easy to fold the crown into the peak / brim and stash the baseball hat in the pocket of a bag or backpack,

    - my direct eye gaze towards someone / lack there of if I am taking a break by looking toward one side is a bit less apparent (as people still see the peak / brim of the baseball hat is facing their direction - which, by listening, is where my attention is likely still focussed).

I have found that not all baseball caps are equal - when it comes to their shape / style / fit.

For general wear ability; I find the 6 panel cotton ones by Beechfield tick my shopping list (fit me comfortably, readily available, reasonably priced, can be obtained online for delivery at home, a broad choice of colour options).

  • I’m usually in a cardigan, I just love cardigans, my favourite one I have 4 times, and I do that with most cardigans or jumpers I like. I just buy multiple so if one gets damaged or wrecked, I've got a back up multiple times haha. I usually have a t shirt underneath or a check shirt, but I do occasionally wear tank tops with a white t shirt underneath if the weather is a bit warmer. Most of my stuff is black or grey, but I am a sucker for purple, which is my favourite colour. When the sun is out and strong, I do wear my flat cap, firstly because I can’t stand the feel of the sun on me, and second to protect my balding head heh heh

  • I wear fruit of the loom t shirts, jeans and normally have a baseball cap on. I always wear dull colours, black, grey or dark colours like blue. I try to avoid bright clothes as my eyes are so sensitive to brightness.

  • I tend to wear baggier clothing, nothing I feel is too revealing as I’m very self conscious and I have been accused of not being slim and perfect so yeah. Don’t really care for brands, just as long as I feel comfortable

  • I wear casual clothing most of the time, mainly hoodies, t-shirts and jeans. Also, I do not like wool as it is too rough on my skin.I dress mainly just for comfort.

  • I wear the same hoodie, oversized top and either leggins/trackies pretty much everyday. I would say I have like 2 hoodies, tops and bottoms that are comfy so I can rotate and wash them. Its mostly F1 merch and summer is a struggle as I loveee my hoodie!

  • That is an excellent thing you have found a way to be and express yourself. Something that I have trouble doing due to fears of other people’s judgement.

I support buying second hand as there is so much fast fashion now

  • I wear sweatpants all the time as they are comfortable and don’t cause me any sensory issues. And graphic t-shirts, mostly with Japanese aesthetics.

  • i feel so similarly , after so many years of masking and conforming to what everyone else dressed like , it felt like i lost my identity and didn’t really know my own personal style or things i like

one of my special interests and something i feel strongly about is environmental welfare and issues , so i love getting my clothes second hand or from sustainable sources ( lucy and yak is my personal favourite , super comfy / sensory friendly and really cute ! ) i don’t like being boxed into a ‘niche’ or ‘aesthetic’ so i just pick up pieces i like and it’s so much more freeing than conforming to everyone else

  • The same three shirts, one pair of trousers, and three different pairs of shoes. All black ofc
