Bank Holidays Like them or not?

I'm not a huge fan, it feels like we've got 3 sundays this week and sunday has never been my favourite day. All the telly gets messed up, there feels like a lot of pressure "to do something". Most of the bank holidays are religious ones and many aren't Christian so have little attachment to them. There also seems to be a huge social divide, white collar workers get to have time off, blue collar ones don't, when I worked in a small independent shop, we closed for bank holidays, some of our customers would complain, they were off work and so were we, younger folks seemed to have no idea that shops might want to close that we workers had homes, families and stuff to do.

How about you, do you like them, or are they a bit blah?

  • I‘m not a big fan of them. I am working all this bank holiday weekend so I like how that is keeping me occupied. However, I struggle with the change to my routine that bank holidays cause like different opening times and public transport not being as readily available. Also, bank holidays change my work routine which makes me restless.

  • This feels relateable. Wanting to be part of the gathering to feel accepted, but also not wanting to be there because of the social pressure, social rules and general overwhelm of everything.

As a child and a young adult I often got told I was ruining everything because I wasn't joining in with the 'fun' and preferred quiet in a different room. How exactly is that ruining everything?

I discovered last year that I can no longer handle busy house parties with 4-5 conversations happening all at once, and everyone shouting to be heard over everyone else. Just no! I'll be with you and the dog.Grin

  • I liked them when I was working. Now that I'm retired, they are more annoying than not. Very few buses, and places more crowded than usual, or not open.

  • I don’t like bank holidays, probably because of the change to the weekly structure. Also, people expect that you will be out doing something special with family, and I am on my own.

i would like to be a part of an Easter Sunday lunch or something like that, but I know it would be stressful trying to join in with everybody and that I would be relieved to get back home to my dog.

  • I used to work bank holidays too when I was hairdressing it seemed a good day for many clients, but it played havoc in relationships when my partener wanted to do holiday things

  • I like the time off work, but don't like how busy everything is. I'd prefer to work them and just have the time back.

I would often work the few days between christmas and new year. It was my favourite time to work. The office was quiet, fewer calls and client interactions, and the work was generally more relaxed. Then one year my manager suggested I would have to go on client site for those days. I don't know if they were joking or not, but I booked them off that year and every year since.

  • I used to live for them in my previous job. Mainly because I hated the job so an extra day off was a true gift. These days I'm self employed so they make no difference to me at all. It's just another day now, but it means that my girlfriend is off work so i can spend time with her when I'm finished with clients in the morning. Blush

  • I always loved them when I was working because of the time off. I was one of those annoying "white collar" people working in an office (although not highly paid). I liked staying home and resting, watching movies & eating treats - I didn't want to go shopping! Now I'm retired it doesn't make much difference to me, although I still get treats to enjoy at Easter & Christmas.
