I don't know which is worse

I don't know which is worse. People underestimating my intelligence (<90) or people overestimating my intelligence(extremely intelligent).

  • I apologise for starting this thread. It was obviously inappropriate. I should keep such things to myself.

  • Why appologise? I can't see anything wrong with what you've posted, I think it's a genuine issue for many of us, people usually NT people hear the word "Autism" and assume we're either blithering idiots or rain man. The reality is that most of, like them are completely average, we're very good at what we know and a crap at what we don't, we maybe a bit wiser in that we often admit that we know nothing about a subject instead of pretending we do and being a boring twat.

  • In my experience it's a topic, intelligence, that many(most?) don't approve of. You are completely right re 'blithering idiots or rain man'. It applies almost as much to health professionals,as it does to the general population.

A good description that I came across more than a few years ago- “The Full Scale IQ is an averaging of these five scales, so it’s only meaningful if the scales are consistent. If a child is superior in verbal reasoning, but below average in visual spatial skills, the full scale number looks average. It’s akin to having an average body temperature because your hair is on fire while your feet are in a bucket of ice water.”

Very late on in life it's  been suggested, by very intelligent people with ADHD, that I may have the 'inattentive' type. People are very sceptical when I say that high range intelligence tests are easier for me than prioritising the steps required to keep my flat clean and tidy. I do genuinely struggle when it comes to prioritising with multistep tasks.

I have more than minor executive functioning deficits when it comes to organising and planning.

  • I don't think being intellectual is about formal study, I thhink that's a thought trap created to keep us in the pigeon holes society has created for us. If we had an education system more based around curosity instead of exams then maybe we'd have fewer traumatised people? In a curiosity based system then, 'why are you bullying me, just because I have an "impairment"?' would become a topic for discussion in itself. I put impairment in "bunny ears", because I wanted a word that would give the sense of what I'm trying to say whilst leaving people free to replace it with whatever it is they've been bullied about and I put bunny ears because I had a brain fart and can't remember what they're called, lol.

Being semi knowlegable is alright, you can still talk about things, some people will know more than you and some less, unfortunately there will always be the odd bar room barrister who has no begining to his knowlege and hides it by being nasty to everybody who disagrees with "his" homespun wisdom.

  • I make no claim to being an expert about anything. Semi knowledgeable about a few things? Yes.

The vain part of me would love to be an intellectual. The self aware part of me knows I never will be. It's nearly 50 years since I studied for anything. I've brushed aside over half a dozen attempts to get me to do a college course. The severe social anxiety, the bullying related trauma, the more than minor executive functioning deficits, have all played their part in making me very avoidant when it comes to further education.
