Halloween

I absolutely hate Halloween. I love the idea of the costumes and the decorations, some of it looks so cool but overall it’s a time of year I dislike because it’s so busy and noisy. And with Bonfire Night days away there’s usually a lot of fireworks exploding and as well as the doorbell going half the night it’s hard to settle and relax.

Normally my mum or sisters will answer the door and I’ll stay upstairs, in my room, trying to chill in front of a movie or listening to my CDs. Despite us living up a rather long hill people still come up to trick or treat which surprises me each year. I’ve never liked the idea of it, the noise and people a massive put off for me. Even as a child I didn’t like Halloween and only ever went trick or treating once, under protest.

Though I’m dreading tomorrow I have started a list of things I could do tomorrow night to keep busy.

  • Watch a movie.
  • Listen to music.
  • Do drawing ... whilst listening to music.
  • Read a book.

All of the above should help me a lot to cope and get through tomorrow night.
I'm also lucky that I own sensory headphones which will help to cancel out the noise of the trick or treaters' and the fireworks.

  • Phoebe,

I tend to just stay in my own room when Halloween is on - I always think if people have decorated their house and their pumpkins are lit, then that was a house that was fine to approach.

My parents usually do put out decorations - although this year they hadn't as they were going out and I wasn't going to open the door or anything like that - mainly because I also know it was also Diwali and the possiblity of fireworks.

I do live in a generally quiet village, but there's a house just across from mine that sets off the really, earth-shatteringly, loud fireworks - although that house hasn't set his one's off yet - so the past few days I've been really tense and struggling to sleep - it takes me to:
    - Have my curtains shut
    - Have my bedside light on
    - Ear plugs
    - Over the head headphones - connected to TV and TV on full blast
    - Dressing gown hood over my head and headphones
And that lot just about gets me through the whole Halloween/Diwali/Fireworks "season".

Even then - that lot doesn't fully help me when my neighbour's fireworks do go off.

  • I quite like fireworks, although I wish they didn't have to be loud, I know quiet ones are made and sold, but I've no idea where? Lots of dogs are terrfied of the loud bangs, my friend has to sedate her dog at this time of year and new years too, as she gets so upset and tries to hide in the smallest space she can get into. Fearn on the other hand quite likes to watch them, she does give the odd woof if ones really loud and close.

A couple of years ago the neighbours had a firework party and the next day our garden looked like the aftermath of the Battle of Agincourt we had that many sticks from rockets stuck in the ground.

  • I've seen hot cross buns in shops.

  • Good shout. Me too, I'd be absolutely lost without them especially on nights like Halloween and Bonfire Night.

I use the word search: https://thewordsearch.com/maker/

When I've helped at the school that's co-joined with the preschool we've done some word search making which the children all seem to enjoy a lot. I enjoy it as well as actual word search books, it's a fun relaxing break from life.

  • I've got noise cancelling earbuds which are really good. Which Website do you create your own?

  • I wouldn't be surprised if that legit happens in the end.

  • Xmas decorations were up in some shops in early september! What next easter eggs and hot cross buns in december?

  • I like doing word searches and colouring. You can create your own word searches online, have you tried that? Sometimes I do my own it can be a fun creative thing to do. I'm currently reading The Book of Doors, it's pretty good actually, a bit dark in places though.

I like to draw cartoon characters and animals.

I'm sorry fireworks have that effect on you. That can't be nice or easy to cope with. Have you tried noise cancelling headphones? I find these really useful for me.

  • I like the idea of a time remembering lost loved ones ... like Day of the Dead in Mexico, where they remember those who have passed. Over there that's more popular than Halloween so I read.

Yes I agree with you on all of the above. And yes I've seen a lot of people wearing poppies, a dad came in to the nursery I work in wearing a poppy and that was almost 3 weeks back. I've also seen Christmas decorations and toys in the shops. Everything's getting earlier ... I don't even want to think about Christmas yet. lol.

  • To me halloween is a nasty American import. I know many parts of the country have had their own traditions for centuries, but I guess they're being subsumed by all the "creepy" stuff and plastic tat.

For me as a pagan, it is the time when we remember our dead, and honour the passing of the year and the gathering in of crops ready for winter.

I think it's about time that Guy Fawkes night was forgotten, it's really a celebration of burning/murdering terrorists and it's anti catholic.

After that we've got Rememberance Day and thats something I feel very conflicted about, my Grandad was in WW1 all the way through and I think it's reprecussions are still being felt, by those of us who are left. I know he would of wanted to remember his fallen comrades, but he would of hated the ceremonial and politicans and royalty being involved with it. It all feels a bit overdone to me and are people wearing poppies earlier this year?

  • Good afternoon;

    I'm not keen on Halloween as it's too commercial (shops usually have loads of pumpkins which people waste);

I usually watch TV, do a word search and maybe do some colouring. What book are you reading? What do you like to draw?

Fireworks trigger a panic attack. Also former army veterans and war in Ukraine. Free of charge by watching them from the window.
