Films you've watched recently

I enjoy watching films but I never have anyone to talk to about them. I thought I might try it here and see what happens. I wish I could have in depth discussions about them, but I'll keep it brief for now. Here are some I've watched recently:

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - I watched the original again recently too, but this I watched last weekend. I thought it was OK but a bit unnecessary, and the original was better. However, it did look a lot of fun, even if it started getting weird towards the end.

Godzilla Minus One - I was genuinely impressed with this film! It technically looked amazing, but the story really felt strong too, I felt really engaged with the main human character and his struggles in post-war Japan.

Castle in the Sky - animation is one of my favourite art forms, and I grew up on Western animation like Disney. I've wanted to watch more Studio Ghibli films because the style of storytelling feels so different and wholesome. This one I watched on my birthday and loved it. I think this was made in the 80's and it blew away anything that Disney could produce during the same time period.

Feel free to add your own.

  • My son and I watched the sci-fi horror film Megan last night (on Netflix), which was about an A.I. doll. For us, we found it to be less of a horror and more like a spoof that had us laughing.

  • I'm working slowly through a Studio Ghibli list on Netflix, My Neighbour Totoro was the last one I watched, also delightful. I need to watch some more now.

  • I watched Godzilla Minus One with subtitles, but I'll watch anime dubbed. I think it's ok when animated because they are rarely lip synced anyway, but watching real actors talk while different words come out looks weird to me.

You mentioned The Wild Robot, I would really recommend watching that. It looks so beautiful, like they somehow made a painting come to life!

You also said Little Shop of Horrors. That's a coincidence because I only just watched that recently. I'd never seen it before but I listened to a podcast singing it's praises and telling the difference between a theatrical and directors cut. So I decided to buy the DVD and watch it and loved it, loved the songs and couldn't believe they got such a realistic puppet to work in the film.

  • I love all those era's John Carpenter films.

  • It's fundamentally the same movie, I love the practical effects in the 1982 version, it's good and gloopy.

  • Finally watched Alien Promethius. Obviosly not as good as Alien/Aliens but better than the rest. The zero gravity acid-for-blood scene was genuinely something new. The last section was just too creepy.

  • I like Frozen because of watching with my niece (and an ex-member - but hopefully future member - here who is very much missed). We even saw the stage version which has amazing special effects.

  • Oh no! I love The Thing. The sequal (well, prequil) isn't too bad, either.

  • I liked the 1998 too! I loved Minus One. It made Godzilla scary again!

  • I love Castle In The Sky definitely one of my movies.

The moment when they make it through the storm cloud and silently see the beautiful island right before them has to be my all time favourite scene from a movie ^^

I recently watched Despicable Me 4 – I love all the Despicable Me movies, and this one didn’t disappoint either! I had intended to go and watch it at the cinema but my anxiety dictated that wasn't ever happening lol Laughing so I bought it from HMV and watched it at home.

And then I recently watched Frozen and Frozen 2 again. I've seen them both hundreds of times and I never get bored of them! I love all Disney.

  • A much under rated movie. Did you ever see Super 8 which is a JJ Abrams movie.

  • My son and I went to our local cinema who were showing "The Thing" as a special Halloween one off showing. I love the film and I've seen it multiple times on dvd but never on the big screen. We settled in only to discover there was a sound issue where we had the musical score and some of the sound effects but no dialogue. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Prior to that I saw Alien Romulus and a quiet place day one and they were great.

I also like studio Ghibli movies with Spirited away, My neighbour Totoro and Howls moving castle are amongst my favourite but I can't bring myself to watch Grave of the firefly.

I want to see Wild robot but I don't know if I could watch it in company, as I struggled badly with Iron giant.

Old science fiction are still one of my favourites, such as the Forbidden planet, This island earth and The day the earth stood still (the least said about the remake the better).

Godzilla minus one was great but I really don't like dubbed movies, I rather watch with subtitles as I feel you loose something in translation, the emotional impact just isn't there.

Monster movies are great, the original King Kong and Skull island, Cloverfield, Godzilla (ideally without Kong), The Thing, Life, Alien etc

Then there's the silly stuff and infinitely quotable movies like Blazing saddles, Young Frankenstein, Little shop of horrors, Life of Brian, The man with two brains etc

I used to go to the cinema about 3 times a week during my late teen and early 20s until other parts of my life events changed.

Other films that I love are What's eating Gilbert Grape, Field of dreams, Collosal , Delicatessen, Fargo. Let's not forget about Wallace and Gromit which are our family favourite.

Movies and music keep me going

  • Godzilla Minus One was incredible, best Godzilla film in my opinion! Took my sister and her boyfriend to see it, don't think they'd ever seen a Godzilla film before and even they loved it. The score was *chef's kiss* and it probably had the best human characters too. (Unpopular opinion perhaps but I actually like the American 1998 Godzilla, well, I enjoyed it as a giant monster movie maybe not so much a Godzilla one though)

Last film I watched was There Will Be Blood. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis as a greedy, manipulative oil prospector during the Oil Boom in the early 20th century. I've seen a few Studio Ghibli films. Spirited Away was the first one I was, I was only young maybe 8 or 9 and that thing with the white masked creeped me out. I've also watched My Neighbour Totoro, which I believe came out in the 80s. I agree about the style, it's very charming

  • The Godfather is brilliant and on the cinema wish list, they are showing Dirty Harry next week. I have to quote… "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse!”

  • I love that film! It takes me right back to being a child and watching it every Christmas or Easter.

I saw The Godfather at the cinema because it shows old films - it was a dream come true for me like yours.

  • I recently went to our local art deco cinema and watched the original 1969, The Italian Job, waited nearly a whole lifetime to see it on the big screen. Booked my normal end of aisle seat, one row from the back. The film is one of my little hobbies, the ‘normies’ don’t research things properly!

  • I loved Godzilla Minus One. It's good that Godzilla is the baddie once again.

I've been watching old films. I finished all the Harry Potter quite recently, and have watched all the Terminator films again.

  • Cowboys & Aliens - anything with Harrison Ford in is good for me.

  • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice I watch this weekend. If course the original is better but I've told others not to judge this by the first. I'm so glad they have kept it in sync with the style of the originGrin. I am the generation that saw the original Grin.

I also loved shooting the references, and the fact they cut who they needed.

It was part of a date night, I know cliche but we wanted to watch it
