Films you've watched recently

I enjoy watching films but I never have anyone to talk to about them. I thought I might try it here and see what happens. I wish I could have in depth discussions about them, but I'll keep it brief for now. Here are some I've watched recently:

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - I watched the original again recently too, but this I watched last weekend. I thought it was OK but a bit unnecessary, and the original was better. However, it did look a lot of fun, even if it started getting weird towards the end.

Godzilla Minus One - I was genuinely impressed with this film! It technically looked amazing, but the story really felt strong too, I felt really engaged with the main human character and his struggles in post-war Japan.

Castle in the Sky - animation is one of my favourite art forms, and I grew up on Western animation like Disney. I've wanted to watch more Studio Ghibli films because the style of storytelling feels so different and wholesome. This one I watched on my birthday and loved it. I think this was made in the 80's and it blew away anything that Disney could produce during the same time period.

Feel free to add your own.

Parents
  • My son and I went to our local cinema who were showing "The Thing" as a special Halloween one off showing. I love the film and I've seen it multiple times on dvd but never on the big screen. We settled in only to discover there was a sound issue where we had the musical score and some of the sound effects but no dialogue. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Prior to that I saw Alien Romulus and a quiet place day one and they were great.

I also like studio Ghibli movies with Spirited away, My neighbour Totoro and Howls moving castle are amongst my favourite but I can't bring myself to watch Grave of the firefly.

I want to see Wild robot but I don't know if I could watch it in company, as I struggled badly with Iron giant.

Old science fiction are still one of my favourites, such as the Forbidden planet, This island earth and The day the earth stood still (the least said about the remake the better).

Godzilla minus one was great but I really don't like dubbed movies, I rather watch with subtitles as I feel you loose something in translation, the emotional impact just isn't there.

Monster movies are great, the original King Kong and Skull island, Cloverfield, Godzilla (ideally without Kong), The Thing, Life, Alien etc

Then there's the silly stuff and infinitely quotable movies like Blazing saddles, Young Frankenstein, Little shop of horrors, Life of Brian, The man with two brains etc

I used to go to the cinema about 3 times a week during my late teen and early 20s until other parts of my life events changed.

Other films that I love are What's eating Gilbert Grape, Field of dreams, Collosal , Delicatessen, Fargo. Let's not forget about Wallace and Gromit which are our family favourite.

Movies and music keep me going

  • Oh no! I love The Thing. The sequal (well, prequil) isn't too bad, either.
