Train tickets

My son is due to go to college next year in the next town. He has a disabled bus pass but the train may be the best option. However the difficulty for him would be getting tickets. As he will only be going 3 days a week not sure if a season ticket would work. He either needs a topped up ticket or something on his phone. We live in England.

Just wondering if anyone is aware of any options that might work.

  • Glad you have found a solution. You can book assistance as well when using the railways. I use this to help me find out where my train leaves from which platform and also to meet me off.

  • Thank you for the suggestion. I checked it out as I have now found we can get a termly card so don't need to purchase tickets but can't use a disabled pass with that. Hoping this works for him.

  • You mentioned a disabled bus pass but why not apply for a disabled persons rail card which gives a third off all fares? Unsure if this would be suitable for your commute but worth looking in to. It has more than paid for itself for me.

  • Thank you. I presume they must still have staff on the platform so maybe when we take a trial journey with him we can ask someone then.

  • Thank you, unfortunately they got rid of the ticket office, just machines. I always prefer asking people. I will do some further investigation to see if I can find out if either of your suggestions are available.

  • I think it depends where you live, my train provider has only just started using top up cards for season tickets across the whole area not just at their London stations. You can also work out on their website which length of season ticket is best value compared to buying daily tickets. Here you can get weekly, monthly or annual tickets. If your station still has a ticket office might be worth asking them

  • Good morning,

Two options I can think of is to speak to someone at a staff station. Where about in England you're from? you can get part time season tickets. Also you need photos for the season tickets. Snappy snaps is really good. Hope this helps you.
