Coping with bad weather

Hello, everyone.

I have difficulty coping with certain specific forms of weather. In cases of good weather, I don't mind. But when my local weather forecast mentions things like heavy rain, thunderstorms, gale force winds or heavy snowfall, especially overnight, I struggle to sleep at night with all that roaring and rumbling going on outside.

I particularly hate it when bolts of lightning flash in the sky. Because of this, I would blindfold myself to avoid seeing the lightning. The actual thunder rumbles aren't such a problem because I would wear ear plugs to reduce the noise. Even so, I struggle to cope with sudden, loud, uncontrolled noises of any description.

Has anyone had any difficulties with coping with bad weather?

  • As long as the rain is not too heavy, I sleep better when it is rainy. I think the sound soothes me because it is a form of white noise and it blocks out the other sounds. Also, it means I am less likely to be woken up by people coming home from a night out - people stay indoors so bring it on!

  • Oh no, how can you hate rain ? ... when the rain falls I feel comforted, maybe I feel like everyone is indoors.... its a good time to go running as the park is empty, so rain is my friend ! I have been in the park for an hour or so all by myself, its great, no screaming kids or kids on bikes to dodge, no drunks with their cans, no groups of teens smoking drugs and no dogs. I don't mind getting wet.

  • Hi - I think lots of people have difficulty to a degree coping with bad weather.  If you think about it louds noises such as thunder can be disconcerting or worse than that for some, including people who aren't autistic.  Older people or those with physical difficulties find ice/snow problematic in many ways, such as having to stay indoors a lot or worrying about slipping or falling if out.  Some people don't like hot weather including those with breathing difficulties.  Just a few examples of how most of us have problems with the weather.  I don't like strong wind.  The noise stops me from sleeping and can make me feel insecure, especially outdoors, as I'm not a heavy person.  Have you considered getting a blackout blind so the lightning doesn't disturb you?  They are sold on argos + probably on amazon etc.
