Are there any classic car fans here?
I've always loved the classics. Both my dad and grandfather loved them so I think I must take after them. Growing up I remember them both having a lot of different classic cars, one of the highlights was my Grandad's MK2 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia X, in stunning gold. He still had it when I was 8 but sold it on ebay when he gave up driving.
I've been a hobbiest classic car restorer for several years and am looking in to setting up my own workshop with my wife, who though doesn't really like cars she puts up with my constant chit chat about them! She's good like that!
Do you have a favourite classic?
I think one of my favourites has to be Vauxhall Royale coupe. I thought these were absolutely gorgeous cars inside and out.
What wasn't to like?
But I'm a fan of them all to be honest. I love the old Triumphs,Vauxhalls, Jaguars and BMWs. Currently restoring a Vauxhall Chevette and in the process of getting my grandfather's old Senator back on the road.
Still some ways to go with the Senator I fear...
I came across this in Grassington today.
My knowledge of motor bikes is zero.
Early cars had a body which was narrower than the wheels, the body was often built by a coach builder, the body on the Rolls Royce above wouldn’t have been built RR, they built the chassis and running gear. The wheel arches being wider than the body just had a running board to join them together. Early cars had a brass petrol can on the running board as petroleum was purchased from a hardware store, the boards also helped with the height of the car body being on top of a high chassis, it helped as a step and pavements were often nonexistent.
High profile cars could have security standing on them, the mob also used them as an easy way do a drive past shooting. Remember the Wacky Races Shard, the “ ant hill mob”, often stood on the running boards!
the compact SUVs of the 90s need to make a comeback. 4WD, high ground clearance but with out all the unnecessary weight and as able to squeeze into small spaces as a medium small city car.
Fold the back seats into the boot and there is plenty of room for you + 1 plus a load of luggage / equipment. Other wise 3 passenger seats to give your 3 mates a lift home from the club or a trip out to the seaside. And you never have to worry about heavy snow or if the camp site is muddy.
I wish my wife was as enthusiastic as your fiancée is! ;)
I love the old Morris's, never worked on an Ital before! Great cars those, so outdated now but great style.
What a beauty!
Nice! Love the old Volkswagens, especially the campers. Would love one myself!
Still haven't bought a Royale. But.....
My Senator has gorgeous new paint, looking especially good on the engine. Bumper and lights back on...
She started first time and despite a slight miss she's running beautifully.
Out of the garage and in the sun :)
Sadly no MOT so couldn't take her on the road but did quickly run around the farm and was perfect.
Nearly time for a new project as the Senator is almost complete!
As a child I thought it was so cool that the engine was in the back of the Beetle. May aunt’s one anyway. The bonnet was the boot.
And perfectly parked, not crossing a line.
It’s an electric Eagle, built in China in low numbers.
Love those two tone tyres
Is this a Rolls-Royce? If not, what is it?
A question to anyone with the knowledge: runner boards on old cars- what was the purpose? Was it to avoid stepping out into muddy terrain as roads were more rural? Or is that just All Creatures Grunt and Smell that has me thinking that?
Looks immaculate too!
From today's visit to the Cotswolds, obviously a Rolls Royce.
Hi Slayer,You'll get on great with my fiancée as she is into her classic cars. She's worked on several Vauxhall Chevette's in the past and is currently working on a Morris Ital at the moment. She's great at solving problems with different cars and knows a lot of different makes.Myself, I am definitely more of a vintage classic car, like the Vauxhall 30/98 (which I just had to google lol). I am completely the opposite to my fiancée when it comes to cars - but I do like them.Mweekie xx
Cool design, a lot better than on the boot. Being on the boot bothers me because you can see it in the mirror... But with those out of sight out of mind.
My Dad didn't own a Senator but he drove one when he worked traffic division for the police. Always singing its praises to my mum and always intended to buy one but sadly he never did, he died in 2018.
I always liked that aerial positioning though - up the side of the window and on up.
