VHS tapes

As you'll probably be well aware, I am a ****** massive fan of VHS tapes and physical media. I've never been too big on streaming sites as they're killing the film industry and, if it continues, there'll be nothing left to stream. I'd be interested to know what VHS tapes you had as a child, I had loads and loads of them so I'll list the Brum ones as this is my favourite show.

Brum: Bumper Special - Seaside and 9 Other Stories (1993)

Brum and the Helicopter and Other Stories (1994)

Brum - Biggest Party Video (1998)

Brum - Helicopter Rescue and Brum and the Marching Band (2000)

Brum - Airport and Other Stories (2001)

Brum - Soccer Hero and Other Stories (2002)

Brum - Crazy Chair Chase and Other Stories (2003)

I also had a tape with recordings from Cbeebies, but it wasn't commercially released.

Pretty vast selection, I know. I also had some DVDs, but that's another story. Let me know if you had any of these.

  • Sylvanian Families was a TV series?

  • For educational videos, I recall Dottie and Buzz, which was a five-part edutainment series with Helena Smee and Marcus Clarke.

  • Must've been a long time ago. Sometime before 1999, as this was when Mike Cavanagh retired. He visited intermittently, but died last year. Do you have any photos?

  • I was the only member of the family to set my Video Recorder, whenever I was little.

I would never miss certain shows; and taped episodes if I had to go with my family somewhere.

Whenever my brother was born, it was Educational Videos; for him.

  • My gran and grampy owned so many VHS they used to play them for me and my sister all the time when we were still children. I can't remember all of them, my memory sucks but I do remember they had Brum which we both loved. I can remember Sylvanian Families, Postman Pat, Fireman Sam and some Disney as well oh and they also had Home Alone which they put on every Xmas.

  • I love VHS tapes and cassette tapes. We had black and white TV for most of my childhood but when we got a colour TV I loved having VHS and we had it long after everyone else had moved onto DVD. I find cassette tapes particularly comforting. I used to record the top 40 charts off the radio onto cassette  and I actually had a cassette walkman until about 3 years ago. People used to give me such surprised looks when I got it out on the tube but I loved it

As for Brum, I love Brum! I actually went to the Brum museum at Bourton on the Water and met Brum and the man from the TV show and had a photo taken with them

  • The young ones. Series

    puppet master movie

I was a young curious boy and learnt how to swap the vhs internal tape with £1land blanks.. oh my

  • My later childhood was Betamax Video, smaller tapes and better quality. My father payed for a video membership at the local shop. It entitled my brother and I to one film every day. Autistic heaven. When VHS won the battle my father bought the entire Betamax video shop collection. As an 11 year old child we had films like The Stud, The Hills Have Eyes and  Deliverance .I have a boxed set of The Six Million Dollar Man on VHS, I’m old school. Our first VHS machine was the Ferguson Video Star. It weighed about 20 kilos and the remote had a cable attaching it to the machine. My parents way of settling a timer to tape a program was to wind up an alarm clock, (with the bell on the top)and set the alarm, when it rang they pressed the record button. We had a  bookcase which had VHS videos in fake plastic book bindings. My mother has about 200 hours of home videos on VHS, I’m in about 10 minutes of them as I hated being filmed.

  • Videos I remember my brothers and I had was a few classics like Bob The Builder, Teletubbies but we also had Titanic, Dirty Dancing and Grease though those were mum and dads.

  • The first VHS I bought (rather than rented) was The Five Doctors (Doctor Who), and a complete collection of surviving episodes was assembled in the years that followed. I've since largely replaced them via DVD and now blu-ray, but some particular sentimental favourites (a fondness for the cover, or a specific memory of the day I ran into town to get it) I will probably hoard forever.

  • Can you remember what episodes were on the Brum one you had? That might help me know which one you owned.

  • Omg I love Brum! I can remember sitting and watching that when I was little with my mum.

There's something really charming about VHS. It's a shame it's so outdated now I would love for them to continue being done. I had a few different ones that I can remember.

    • Raggy Dolls.
    • Bob the Builder A Christmas To Remember.
    • Noddy.
    • The Jungle Book.
    • Brum - though I can't remember which one.
    • Had fireman Sam as well.
