To quote someone's message, first select/highlight the relevant text, and then use the Quote button that appears
To "mention" someone, type @ followed by the start of the forum name, and choose from the list; that person will get a notification of being mentioned

I really really struggle to stop myself from saying or posting inappropriate things.

I can't even give an example because I would be banned from this site.

I need practical help and advice.

So if you are ever wanting to post something and have the moment where you think "is this inappropriate?", just check the rules and see if it breaks any of them.
