ASD Fun day ideas!

Hi everyone!

I am a volunteer for the NAS and run the Cowes Support Group on the Isle of Wight, my 11 year old daughter has Aspergers and my 4 year old son has HFA.

We are planning a fun day later in the year and I was after a few tips on ASD friendly entertainment!

I went to a fun day last year (not arranged by me!) where they had a magician.  For neurotypical children, he was great but he talked far too much, told tongue in cheek jokes and really went to town with the Punch and Judy show!!  Needless to say, most, if not all, the children with ASD steered well clear of him!  This got me thinking, what exactly IS ideal entertainment for our children on a generic scale?  Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

  • Have you thought about approaching any of your local Special Schools to see who they use? I'm in the Kent/Medway area & I know of Parents/Schools that have had: Silent Disco's (each child has their own set of headphones so that they can adjust the volume to suit themselves- quite funny to watch children dancing in 'silence') a magic show (very slapstick and a fun 'disco' afterwards), SEN only trampolining sessions at local Leisure Centre & SEN only sessions at indoor play centre for younger children.

Sometimes activity centres ect are willing to have a special session on their 'quiet' night in the week.

Interactive science centres are often a big hit as well.
