Any top tips for burnout recovery? My 13 year old daughter is struggling
Give yourself time to rest and recover. Don’t try to do anything too big too soon or you will set yourself back. Rest is my number one top tip, rest whenever you can for as long as you can. When I was burnt out due to exam pressure and stress I could hardly function and pushed myself to get better and that was the wrong thing to do. Even reading a chapter of a book was too much for me at that time.
Resting and sleeping were the best things for me and doing things little and often. It can be a long road to recovery but you’ll get there. Fell better soon xx.
Hi and welcome to the community.
I'm sorry to hear of your daughter's struggles.
I suggest asking her GP for support, alongside which you and/or she might find these NAS resources helpful:
NAS - Autistic fatigue and burnout
NAS Professional Practice - Understanding autistic burnout
There's also some great (free) advice here from Dr Megan Neff - a neurodivergent author (who's also a clinician and advocate):
Autistic Burnout Recovery: How to Build a Recovery Plan
I also have this book of hers. It's very user-friendly, including lots of diagrams and worksheets:
The Autistic Burnout Workbook: Your Guide to Your Personal Recovery Plan
Your daughter might also find these resources helpful. They're designed to support autistic teenagers in understanding what being autistic means to them, and include - for example - a guide to energy accounting, which might help with avoiding burnout in the future:
NAS - Resources for autistic teenagers - Know Yourself series
