Burnout and work

So in the last two months, I have been signed off by my doctor twice. I'm still not well but my employer has decided that I don't qualify for company sick pay.

I've been struggling with burnout for most of the year this has caused a lot of issues. My standard of work has gotten worse and I have taken short cuts, to avoid stress. Back in April I contacted COVID and this seems to be the catalyst for all my physical, mental and emotional health.

They have told me that, I'm not eligible due to the amount of time off.

  • Hello

I'm sorry to hear that you have had a tough time at work. You might like to have a look at our guide ‘Support at work – a guide for autistic people’ which you can find here:

    https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/employment/support-at-work/autistic-adults

There is information in the guide about bullying in the workplace which might be helpful, information about the role of your employer and advice regarding what you can do if you think you are being bullied or discriminated against.

    All the best,

    ChloeMod

  • Thanks for the responses.

I got paid over night, my company has deducted, around £600. I have contested their decision and contacted my union.

Ive been back at work for a week or so and still feeling terrible.

Also, I had applied for UC after seeing what I was entitled to and asked for a £300 advance payment. Which looks like it has been approved. So that mitigates dom of my losses.

so in the worst case scenario, I have myself covered.

That sounds about right - the company is only obliged to give you the amount of sick pay agreed in your contract and after this you have to apply to the government for statutory sick pay if you have a doctors note for the burnout I believe (hopefully someone can update this).

    2 questions here:

1 - do you have an official diagnosis for autism

2 - if you have a diagnosis, did you inform your employer.

If the answer to both is yes then you shoud consider asking your employer to set a meeting to talk about going back to work with adjustments for your disability.

If your job does not really lend itself well to adjustments then unfortunately you probalby need to consider a career change to something that does not cause the burnout. This may be a less demainding employer or a complete change in direction for you,

  • Hi Ed's

So sorry to hear that you're so unwell, this is really awful and must be so stressful for you.

I think you might be able to claim some sort of benefit (?) I am no expert, but I think you can get universal credit if you are out of work.

My employers only provide sick pay for x number of weeks, before you're transferred to SSP (statutory sick pay) that the government entitles you to, I think. Are you in the UK?

I also had a couple of very bad concurrent burnout periods and sick leave and my employer stopped helping after a while.

Here if you need to chat - I'm sure someone will be along shortly who understands the benefit system better. x
