Tension headaches

Hi, I was diagnosed as autistic as an adult just over 7 years ago. For most of my life I have experienced tension headaches - tighness and pain around the temples and jaw. I have noticed as an adult that these often occur when I feel stressed, overloaded, or at times of change. Is this something related to being autistic and has anyone else experienced this? I'm concerned as painkilelrs don't seem to help and I get very shut off and irrtiable when I'm experiencing a tension headache, which isn't ideal as I have three children and workas a manager.

  • That’s really useful, thanks

  • If you can, ask to try a small dose on occasion of Benzos under GP supervision when these start. For Autistics, it could be related to GABA levels and the inability to simply reduce the impact of stress internally. These are not a long-term solution, but can help give one clarity to then reassess life.

Are there ways to reduce the stress in your life on a practical level? Many of us can find ourselves in positions we're ill-suited for which are more harmful to our health and wellbeing. I had to make a lot of changes in my life around 40 as I had been getting stress related headaches for about 2 years. I'm always apprehensive with drugs but the doctor had said the potential for a stroke with stress at the level it was causing a headache would lead to a stroke. I also have a child so I made a decision based on this. But since, I've had to mind things I wasn't even aware of adding to it: swapping out halogens for LEDs, be proactive and protective of enforced rest, let go of some relationships and reconfigure how I was working by making investments with time and resources that would have a better result future forward.

We're not always helped in life, and the current state of society is too much for most.
