  • Hi Longman,

We've had a response, hope it proves helpful.

It is possible to get information from the Autism Services Directory www.autism.org.uk/directory  that matches a person's needs more precisely than having to wade through a lot of resources listed under place.

One way would be to use the Advanced Search, use the  link on the left hand side of the home page or this link

Put the distance in miles and your postcode to define the geographical area you want to search. Tick the categories of service or support group you are interested in and scroll down towards the bottom to enter the age of the person with autism.  In the situation described by the enquirer  you might want to choose local groups and social groups.

Help with using the Directory is available here http://www.autism.org.uk/directory/help

Another way would be to enter a profile on Signpost www.autism.org.uk/signpost where all you need to do is answer 6 short questions. Once you have submitted your profile you will see on the left hand side a link to Key services. Select that. Then select the types of services or support you are interested in  and you will find the names of services that are near you are pulled through into Signpost from the Autism Services Directory. Signpost will have done the searching for you."
  • Thanks for the feedback Longman I'll pass that on to the directory team.

  • Go to the bottom of the right hand column on the NAS website home page. There's a little map with either enter service or enter place, or below it an Autism Services Directory which opens a page with more search options.

Hopefully there will be an organisation locally to whom you can go to seek advice relevant to local schools and services.

The main problem with this resource is it lists alphabetically eg under a place, so you might have to scroll through a lot of unhelpful looking information. NAS local groups come under N, but what would an independent parents group vome under - not necessarily P?

I would ask the Moderators, if they are watching, to look into placing priorities first then repeating them in a full alphabetical list.

  • I believe the law is that (or will be with the new bill) that children on the spectrum have to be supported by CAMHS etc. until they are 25.  Check up on it.

This is a typical scenario, CAMHS often don't give a damn about autistic children and wash their hands of the situation, seeing it as a lost cause.

I would call up the person she saw and request ongoing support.  They can't refuse, even if you have to get re-referred by your GP.  Once she is 18, adult services can (and in law should) provide her with an autism care pathway.

If she needs DLA you can apply for that.  See if there are any Aspie meetups in your area she could go to for friends.
