  • Are the people who diagnosed you referring you on to services in your area who can  help you? If not, can your Mum help you to find out what is available for you, especially if you need to talk to someone to help you through these early days?

If not, you can get information from this website about what is available in the area where you live. Have a look round the website or you could call the NAS helpline.

Once I had my diagnosis, I felt at least I knew what I was dealing with. I was not diagnosed until my 50's, so had a lot of years when I just struggled to cope, with little idea of what was the matter. I am determined to regard my diagnosis as a start and not to look back.

I am not surprised it seems frightening for you now, it is all new, but there is a lot of help available out there. Start from the home page on this site.

  • its amazing how much relief you have but im not reli sure where or what to do about it from here on in i rely so much on my mum to help understand the world im 22 ive managed to do a college course for nursing and get a job which is a massive acheivement especially as i had so much problem with school and growing up but when i move out the world is guna be so different for me from what i know now sounds bizarre buts its reli frightening  i live in my own bubble lol  i sort of wished i had been diagnosed when i was two do make the condition or life any easier but at least you can recognise and learn things as ur growing up but now feel like its abit to late i wonder if being diagnosed earlier makes things easier to understand ihave loads of questions but im nore sure what help im entitled to or what now i get direct payments but i struggle with that in allowing different people into my home or even being near me lol

  • Hi loz. Know how you feel. I was diagnosed a few weeks ago. My first feeling was of relief, which then kind of morphed into being happy.  That went on for a couple of days, then I started to think - well, what now.

It has settled down now, but I have to admit I did find it a roller-coaster for the first couple of weeks.

Plenty of people for you to talk to on this site who will understand what you are going through.

  • Hi loz - welcome to the site.  Lots of people here to chat to who understand.  Lots of info to check out as well.  It sounds like you've had a very long haul to get your diagnosis but you got there in the end!  Yes, I think quite often professionals can see clearly when someone is autistic.  When my son was a bit under 2 years old, a person I knew asked if he was autistic.  She had no qualifications in any respect but she was right.  He was diagnosed by professionals shortly before his 3rd birthday, but the diagnostic process started several months after she'd mentioned + I hadn't any knowledge about autism at all at that point.  So....have a look around the posts + home page if you haven't already + join in with any conversations when you want to.
