a little bit of help needed

hi everybody, im robbie, i have an 18 year old daughter with autism, she is a good kid but i think she has reached  the age when she dont want to be hanging around with her dad anymore. she attends college two and a half days a week, but its not enough to occupy her mind, like alot of autistic young adults she does not have many friends she is not capable of going out much on her own and definatly not after dark.   i would like to find social clubs in the cannock area for autistic people, and also supervised days out, activity weekends and supervised holidays. her mom does not have a lot to do with her, i am her full time carer, so any suggestions would be great,, also anyone in the cannock area get in touch, give me some ideas,, im a bit lost to be honest..   thanks robbie.

  • Hi Robblie

We started a new meetup group to connect families, volunteers and professions.

Hopefully as the list grows more people can be connected at local level. Also handy will be an easy to find web page with all the local groups and services available in that local area (council).

Will I have a look and pass any useful info on Staffordshire…

  • hi everybody, i need some help in finding my daughter some activities.

can anybody give me any details or web addresses of any supervised days out, weekends away or supervised holidays for young adults (ie 19yo young lady) based in the stafforshire/ west midlands area. iv been told about one but cant find any details online. lift for life camp????    thanks folks

  • thanks for the reply crystal, were in staffordshire 10 miles south of stafford its self,, the nock bit of cannock does make a lot of people thik were in scotland lol. anyway, she has never had a social worker on her side all he way through her schooling thats something i can get on to monday, she lives with me all the time, never stays at her moms not even overnight, i think were getting all the right benifits as now i am unable to work since she moved in with me. she is doing well at college and is following the path towards social care maybe teaching in years to come, the main things i would like to get is her social life organised as she does nothing apart from college and tv. a befriending service sounds great,, just for her to spend time up the local town with another person would be great and a big confidence builder,  once again thanks for reply and i will speak to you again.

  • Again, the NAS should be organisating a local to local befriending contact service. I am sure there autistic people with the same condition nearby, unknown to you. The NAS could act as an introduction service to prevent social isolation.

Does anyone actually know what the NAS do for there money, except PR brochures and create a brand image which a falsehood in reality.

  • Hi Robbie - welcome to the site.  I don't live in Scotland.  Have you got a social worker who may be able to point you + your daughter in the right direction for social activities + support to take part?   Is she getting all the money she's entitled to?  Also there are "befriending" services where they match a person with another person so they can spend time together going out etc.  Your social services dept may hold such a list.  Has your daughter said what she wants to do now she's 18?  Don't be too concerned about feeling a bit lost - we've all felt that way at times.  You sound like a good dad.
