Hi - I'm new here

Hi, I'm new this his board, so I thought I should introduce myself here first.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was still I school - I tried to brush it off for years, and get on with my life, but I have too many problems to be able to do that.

I've been trying to find work, but with no luck, first because I find it difficult to write an application letter, also I find it tough in interviews because I'm not very good in conversation - I am a friendly, approachable persons, but that doesn't come across in interviews - I don't know whether or not I should tell them I have Aspergers, or if that would ruin any chance I have of getting a job.

I wish I could do this under better conditions, but I have to go in for an interview with a company in charge of running the Work Program, which I was placed on a few years ago. I'm worried about it - even though I've had interviews with them before, and everything was okay. My mum has agreed to go with me, but I still feel like it's going to end badly.

Anyway, that's me, and that's where I am right now. Sorry if this all sounds bad, but that's just how it is. Sorry.

  • It's been a while since I've commented, so I thought I should provide an update on how things are going

I've had two interviews with someone from the company running the Work Program - and  he seems like a nice guy, someone who was willing to help. We've discussed some of the issues I face, and how they could be overcome, and possible help. What was really great is he didn't seem to be in a rush to get rid of me so he could leave, or see someone else -  we ended up talking for almost 40 minutes, and I left thinking this could all work out.

Caretwo - thanks again for the introductory document - I gave one to the advisor, and he was very impressed by it.

  • Thanks.

I went to a job fair yesterday - it's like a convention where local employers and job agencies gather, and give you an idea of what jobs they have on offer. I talked to some people from various agencies - I told them about having Aspergers, and they were very understanding. I just hope it leads somewhere.

an interesting link on work and Autism,,

NAS and Autism work ? a white elephant

NAS and Research ? a white elephant

  • Thanks - I will try to use this in future job applications - I may also take a copy with me to the interview on Wednesday.

  • Well, ideally I'd like something in film/television - that's what I like, and I do have a degree in film production. Problem is, where I live, there aren't too many opportunities for that.

Failing that, I'd like something in retail - I've been doing some voluntary work in a local charity shop, so I'd like to take that further.

Work Program may not sound very appealing, but if it helps me to get a job, then it can't be all bad - also, it gets me out of the house - I feel as though I'm going crazy sometimes staying in the house for too long.

  • Film,

Don't be an apologytist, things will "work" themselves out. Work is just an idea to get the idle working for those who are idle too but call themselves management.

Labour towards and for your heart, forget work for just work, it does not work. Work program sounds like something out a prison service framework. "Am a working boss !", "step off the line, boss !" .., only joking. Seriously, don't be to quick to run into a system of work, find a passion that suits you and the rest will follow. Be it baking cakes, painting, nature or investment banking.

What sort of "vocational work" are you looking for ?
