Getting a diagnosis for my son

I have just started the process of getting my 19 year old son diagnosed with autism. I have given a list of traits that make me believe this but the doctor wasn't too positive due to my son's age. What advice can you give me please

  • follow this plan and my extra notes

Make a list of reasons why u think u are autistic.

include relatives in your family who are autistic or adhd or called weird/different

and a list of occasions when u have been called weird, autistic, different

the list should be electronic ie so you can email it to anyone who wants it.

  • Hi Lisa, I’m 29 and trying to get an assessment. You do find people are more sceptical with adults than children, maybe because it’s harder to diagnose. I think when you know, you know. Ultimately, whilst a diagnosis is important for recognition and support services, you know your son and he knows he’s autistic too, so don’t be put off if it proves difficult because some random stranger who doesn’t know you or him might disagree

  • Hi there. I think my advice would be to persevere. The main problem would be the waiting time for assessment. In my area, the waiting time for assessment following referral is about 2 years for 18+ years. But if I may say, many of us here on the site have been diagnosed as adults, not children.

If you have a look through some of the recent threads, you might also find some useful advice about diagnosis.

    Hang in there.
