Aspergers and Mental Health

Really concerned about my son almost 15.

He has admitted today that he is feeling really down and has attempted Suicide on a couple of occasions.

Really not a huge surprise, but just worried how he will cope with fight for help.

Has anyone any experience of CAMHS in Wakefield area?

  • Thank you both, H was diagnosed with Aspergers in 2005 at 5, and still in school.

I took him out of school just before his 6th Birthday as School were not coping, and he turn was not coping well at school.

He has always shown signs of anxiety, and gets very stressed about tests and exams.

I think the main issues are some ongoing health issues and the fight we have had for treatment, and his grandmother moving in with us.

He has talked about suicide in the past, normally only during a meltdown (thankfully rare)

  • Hi I also don't know about Wakefield CAMHS, but as someone with high functioning autism I know a lot about Suicide, as I have thought about it, and attempted it several times.  So much so, that I have been in hospital afterwards, mental not physical.  I think it is appaling the lack of knowledge about autism and suicide attempts that I am now going to do my PhD in suicide prevention for those with autism.  Please make sure your son sees CAMHS and that he know that he isn't alone.  Please take care of him as he is precious.

  • Sorry, I don't have experience of Wakefield, but i do have experience of CAMH's.

For us, CAMH's were great at identifying the reasons for our son's depression, (The failure of his School to support his SEN) but not much good at the duration of support needed once his needs had been identified. That said, they didn't identify that he had Aspergers either. I think he had between 6-8 sessions. In my experience people seldom get better to a set time frame and that was what happened.

We ended up finding a private counsellor in the end and this turned out to be the best thing. This counsellor was very skilled, spotted he had ASD traits and refered him for assessment. He went on to support my son, very well and for as long as was needed.

The shock of finding that your child is contemplating suicide is very painful. The waiting time for children,  in my opinion, is often too long. When You are depressed you need support their and then.

Has your son told you the reasons behind his thoughts? Is it bullying or School related?
