autism diagnosis

hi all my name is jade, and my son who is now 3 has been diagnosed with an asd but no-one will tell me where on the spectrum he falls, i know its like an umbrella system or so its been explained to me but the school i want him to go to will only accept moderate or severe cases of asd children so how do i find this out? i have his scores from his ados assessment can i find out the severity of his case from this? any help would be greatly appreciated xx

  • Hi all,

Thanks for your comments :-) Helps to know other people are going through the same thing, ive got my sons school sorted now, he starts in jan, will be good for him.

Hope u all have a brilliant xmas an a happy new year :-)

    xx

  • hi Jade,

I would of thought that the school would except the ADOS scores as a good indication as to whether there school would be a good place for your son as it will show them exactly what challenges your son faces better than saying where he fits on a scale. It might also be worth trying to get input from an educational psychatrist as transfering a clinical diagnosis to a practical educational diagnosis is very confusing.

On a more general note away from an educational setting I think it is very difficult to say with any certanty where some people with ASD would fit on any one scale of ASD.

For example my son who has AS and Dyspraxia has very little difficulty in some areas and has a lot of difficulties in other areas. So to say where he fits in would be very difficult you would need to say where he measured in each different aspect of AS saying he would be mild in one area and severe in another would just lead to confusion and misunderstanding. I now try to explain to people his individual needs and challenges he faces  when they ask me where does he fit in on the scales of measuring ASD.

So this might explain why no one has told you where your son fits on a scale, not that they dont want to but more because they cant. Hope this makes sence to you.

    Good luck with the school

    Sam

  • Oops, just realised I'd added the wrong link - I've edited my reply so the link to the Education Rights Service is up there now

  • Hi Jim,

    Thanks again

  • Hi Jade,

Sounds like a really difficult situation, especially with the view of the school. I'm sure they need to make an assessment of children they teach but that's hard if no one is helping you with the process.

Can I suggest calling our Education Rights Service - I'm sure they will have lots of experience dealing with similar situations and should be able to talk through some appropriate next steps. Follow the link below to find out the ways you can get in touch -

And I don't know if it will help but you may want to look at our 'After diagnosis' leaflet to see if anything there is useful -

I hope that helps and other people on the Community may be able to share their experiences of similar situations.
