Scientific terms in every day use

I hate how scientific terms are now a part of the lexicon

I can no longer just enjoy my hobbies without being told about dopamine drops

I cant reset my sleep pattern without being lectured about. Circadian rythems

I don't know. Why but it all puts me on edge

  • I think that often what is annoying is the intent of the person saying it, trying to rationalise a worry away, and avoid further exploration or introspection, or exert an authority-like role (which we usually dislike).

It also happens that some of these explanations, when related not to nature but to ourselves, are not actionable. For example, rather that a statement like "You are having dopamine drops." the actionable statement is: What high-level actions did I take, that produced the following effects? Is there anything that could be improved?

But in other areas a scientific explanation can be quite nice.

    • Thinking that there are tiny chemical machines within a plant that harvest solar energy and store it in chemical bonds of molecules via CO2, and usually (not always) produce Oxygen as a subproduct which enables us to live, isn't quite marvellous?

So maybe it is the intent of terminating the process of self-understanding or doubting what is annoying in the cases you described?

Also, sometimes we may want a more romantic explanation, such as the stories of Orion The Hunter.

  • I think if someone asked me what high level actions I'd undertaken, I'd look at then and think 'Eh, WTF you on about?'. I think sometimes we do want a more romantic answer or not one thats so reductive and takes the fun out of life, sometimes people react sharply to certain expressions we use. I said to an ex 'Oh look, the new moon's holding the old moon in her arms', he exploded about my romantic world view and how I should say things like that because they were untrue, he couldn't get the idea that this is just an expression that I heard and used for years, about when you can see a sliver of new moon, but a short of shadow of the whole moon.

  • Interesting.

By "high level" I meant behaviours, feelings, emotions, goals, habits and so forth. The low level is instead what OP was describing (in terms of neuro transmitters, neurons and so forth.)

I do think sciencific explanations can be just as beautiful, or more, than other explanations.

But I am now considering other people may have a different perspective, or that the context matters.

I guess we are all different and maybe one should just try to sense how the other person communicates.

Apologies OP if it reads odd!
