Scientific terms in every day use

I hate how scientific terms are now a part of the lexicon

I can no longer just enjoy my hobbies without being told about dopamine drops

I cant reset my sleep pattern without being lectured about. Circadian rythems

I don't know. Why but it all puts me on edge

  • I think that often what is annoying is the intent of the person saying it, trying to rationalise a worry away, and avoid further exploration or introspection, or exert an authority-like role (which we usually dislike).

It also happens that some of these explanations, when related not to nature but to ourselves, are not actionable. For example, rather that a statement like "You are having dopamine drops." the actionable statement is: What high-level actions did I take, that produced the following effects? Is there anything that could be improved?

But in other areas the effect of a scientific explanation is rather celebrated.

    • Thinking that there are tiny chemical machines within a plant that harvest solar energy and store it in chemical bonds of molecules via CO2, and usually (not always) produce Oxygen as a subproduct which enables us to live, isn't quite marvellous?
    • Similarly, the fact that when we look at the light of a star, it has been travelling through space for millions or billions of light years, seem to me quite beautiful. Sometimes, one may prefer to think this is an old soul, but not all the time.

In summary, I think the problem is not the scientific explanation, because if anything this makes Nature even more wonderful, but it is the intent of terminating the process of self-understanding or doubting.

Another cue I'd use is context: yes, sometimes we may want a romantic explanation, such as the stories of Orion The Hunter.

  • Maybe the fish is fresher, or the salty sea air compliments them? I don't know, I don't eat fish and I don't like chips.

  • Exactly food is a huge sensory part of my day and a meal out is an experience (not always a good one but to be fair most food places understand your there for a peaceful meal other than fast food place where kids riot and teenagers cause issues)

But the fact I enjoy a meal more with a good lighting or the right sound levels and good company doesn't need to be explained with science I just need to. Enjoy it

Why does fish and chips days better by the sea? Because im. Having fun is why that is all

  • I think some people use science to take the wonder and magic from the world and I wonder where people get these ideas from? Who decided that the first 3 mouthfulls are the best and what are they eating? Custard? How can I not enjoy a variety on my plate/ I think these people must be those who see food as fuel and not something to be enjoyed, shared, celebrated and an art form and I don't means poncy micro herbs placed to top with tweezers!

  • Yes I suppose your mind wonders to the science when you just what to enjoy the book

Also I. Don't unsetand. When people claim the first few bites of food are the most enjoyable my brain doesn't seem to work that way I enjoy each bite the same.

I guess it's another example of a world that wasnt made for me.

Like my brain reacts to stuff different

Sometimes I. Love learning about my. Hobbies(this they become special interests) bit oth t times learning how tech works. Or what ever I feel like my hobby is less fun

  • Because its so reductive? It reduces pleasure to a bunch of chemicals with the implication that we have concious control of them when we don't. I like reading, but theres lots of books and literary styles I don't like so I don't get dopmaine hits from Mills and Boon, I get annoyed chemicals and even moe annoyed ones when I'm told that its a book and I like reading therefore I must enjoy that book simply because its a book.
