Does anyone have sensitivities?

Especially I'm wondering about sensitivities and allegric reactions to food dye/additives.

I wondered if that might be why medication can be a bit or an issue.

I'm thinking I do to allura red and titanium dioxide = maybe others. I'm on a lot of meds for health issues so it's a real concern

  • I have a bread machine and make all my own bread and have done for years, shop bought bread makes me feel bloated and a bit queasy. I have problems with plasters too.

I can't use normal toothpaste, I think it's due to sodium laurel/laureth sulphate from mineral sources rather than vegetable ones, it seems quite a common problem and dentists are aware of it. It gives me contact dermatitis in my mouth which includes swollen lips and gums, and all the little thingies on my tongue to stand up and tingle. I threw my old toothbrush away and got a new one, in case it was caused by bacteria and cleaned my teeth with pure bicarbonate of soda from the baking section of the supermarket, for a week until all the soreness had gone. Then I reintroduced normal toothpaste and all the itching and soreness started again, so I bought some toothpaste from a wholefood shop that dosen't contain any nasties and went through the whole process again, I was fine with the new toothpaste.

Sodium laureth sulphate is a foaming agent and is used in lots of things, from toothpaste to laundry products and it's a pain in the bum!

  • I think I may have an issue with something in some types of bread, but I can't figure it out.

I don't each much processed food, so tend not to have any colourings.

I'm allergic to plasters, I have to use micropore stuff. The regular ones are ok for a few hours, but when I broke my fingers they strapped them up and after about 36 hours my skin blistered a d the top layer came off

I bought some Sensodyne toothpaste for gums, but that makes my lips swell up after a couple of days of use.

I only use Fairy non-bio for clothes. New clothes are always washed before wearing.

I used Co-op pure vegetable soap bars with no colour or scent, others cause issues for my face, especially if I sweat.

  • I find washing new clothes before wearing them helps, as they will have been treated with stuff to stop moths and things getting in them

I used to buy fabrics by the roll when my wife had a fashion business and I was helping in the manufacturing process by pattern making, cutting, overlocking the pieces.

Through this you get to see that a lot of companies leave a lot of the chemicals in the fabrics from the dying / manufacturing processes as it costs them every time they wash the material, so a newly made garment will most likely still have lots of nasty checmical still present.

I got to visit a few of the manufacturing plants for fabric as I'm a bit of an engineering nerd and the amount of chemicals used in the dying process is scary.

I remember often having quite sore hands from so much handling of the raw fabric at the end of the day and I do not normally have sensitive skin.

Also from visiting factories where garments are manufactured, the hygiene levels where the material and garments are stored and handled leaves a lot to be desired in many cases, especially (but not exclusively) for the cheaper items.

Always wash something new before using if you have sensitive skin..

  • I just don't like them, they taste weird and horrible to me, along with many of thier relatives, like celeriac and raddishes and khol rabi must have fallen from the devils backside, it's so foul.

  • Urticaria and think IBS for me. I avoid gluten which definitely helps with bloating.

  • Are you allergic to turnips or just intolerant?

  • I find baby lotion and oils upset my skin too, I thinkthis is because they contain mineral oil rather than vegetable ones and are probably loaded with PEG's too.

  • Loads of them, the skin on my face is so sensitive I react to baby lotion,  I have to be very careful what clothes I buy, lots of things make me really itchy. I have IBS, or so I'm told, my diet is quite the balancing act as it gets easily upset and the *ahem* consequences can go either way. I'm  extremely sensitive to gluten, not going for a Coeliac diagnosis as I'm not prepared to put my body through eating gluten again. I also have hay-fever and asthma.

I think that a lot of my sensitivities are either caused by or exacerbated by stress....yet to get on top of that one.

  • Wow that's harsh. sorry you have all that especially as the medical staff don't sound helpful. Maybe some sort of electronic medicalert memory stick thing for your allergy list? they should invent this

I have just developed an allergy to something in dove hand wash it's annoying - i thought that one was ok.

I'm on a few meds and I wonder if a much milder allergy than yours or even an insensitivity is causing my bladder pain when I have my migraine meds.....

  • I'm sorry you're going through all that and it resonates with me. I am allergic to so many things that my GP prescribed the highest strength Fexofenadine for me to take daily. I've been taking it for around 2 years now and I still get problems with allergies. Did you find that your allergies started later in life and gradually ramped up? I didn't have any until I was in my 30s and now I've got a list as long as my arm! Like you, I am allergic to shampoos, hair dyes etc and to a whole raft of medications, including plasters unfortunately. Air fresheners and perfumes are a nightmare and oilseed rape pollen makes me so ill I stop breathing.

I know what you mean about some people treating it as though it's an affectation. I can't eat wheat and cow dairy and my family often joke about it, or prepare meals they know I can't fully participate in, which makes me feel excluded and miserable.

If you ever find a solution to your allergic reactions I'd love you to share it with me please.

  • I've got loads of them, one of the most encompassing is PEG's or polyethaline glycol, it's in everything, from medical creams, to shampoo and laundry products, make-up the lot. I never knew that there was one thing that was a fairly coomon allergen until I went for my first Covid jab and was refused it because the pharmacist took one look a tthe list of allergies and told me that was what it was. I had to have my jabs in hospital, all hooked up to monitors and stuff.

My GP has to get her book of meds out when prescribing me stuff, she tries to prescribe me ointments as they have far fewer ingredients in them usually one or two base ingredients and the active one.

There's loads of other stuff I'm allergic or intollerant to, latex, penecillin, flagyl, (another anti-biotic), opiates make me hallucinate really badly without giving me much in the way of pain relief, ibuprofen and aspirin I can't take either. My body seems unable to digest meat or fish and the results if I do eat them are incredibly painful, I can't have sweet and sour foods because if I do I vomit violently and imediately, monosodium glutimate makes me really ill, the last time I accidently ate some, I thought I was going to have a heart attack and nearly called an ambulance.

There's a few things that trigger IBS, like swede and bananas that I avoid plus things I really don't like, like turnips and raddishes.

What makes it all seem worse is people go on about what an inconvenience I am to them, do they never think about what it's like for me? I've had some serious arguments over it, people often think it's some kind of affectation and get really impatient. It's even worse when it's medical staff, then I have a real fight on my hands, I've been given stuff they'e known I'm allergic too when I've been unconcious, then I've woken up with the symptoms and find out what I've been given and have an argument when I should be resting.

People ask if I shouldn't have one of those neckalces that tell first responder about your allergies, my reply is that I'd need a breast plate to fit the list of my allergies on it!

  • Thanks. Sounds sensible testing is a chore.

  • I have Cholinergic Urticaria / hives, and maybe lactose intolerance (stopped taking it without testing.)

Not to additives though. Although I avoid most of dressings and stuff full of them.
