Tylenol vs Autism Discovery Dates

After a quick google search from a uneducated autistic guy ( me ), i found that Tylenol was introduced in 1955 and Autism Discovery was 1911, this is quite a shocking discovery since the only way Tylenol could cause autism is if "TIME TRAVEL" was invented! but after some research i couldn't find any time machines.... so either I'm bad at googling/research and a time machine exists or the people who think the above is connected to Autism are dumber then a uneducated person like myself! ( only spend 15 mins researching as-well )

Tylenol was introduced in 1955 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tylenol_%28brand%29

Autism Discovery: The term "autism" was first introduced in 1911 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_autism

Edit : Also - The MMR vaccine was introduced in 1963 - en.wikipedia.org/.../MMR_vaccine

  • I was curious too and ended up reading more about the autism lawsuit that’s going on in the U.S. right now. It’s focused on claims that using acetaminophen during pregnancy might increase autism risk in kids. The research isn’t solid yet, though—lots of mixed results and no clear cause-effect proven. Some of it seems to stir up worry more than give real answers.

  • I didn't have the MMR vaccine either, I've had mumps which was really painful and dangerous if you get it as an adult, especially for men. I was off school with measles when they came round to give the measles jab, measles was horrible, I remember being really ill with it and having the doctor out at least twice.

I think people forget what it was like before we had vaccines, the child mortality rate and disabilities from things like polio, diptheria etc, now unfortunaltely we're seeing child deaths again from things like measles which could be prevented.

  • Unless the increase starts around 1955

The big increase started around 2000 (or the late 1990s). The reasons are down to a changes in the definition of Autism in the diagnostic manuals, greater awareness of the condition (e.g., it's not only for white boys), easier access to diagnosis, latelings like us figuring it out for ourselves and getting diagnosed, etc., etc.

In my own case, for example, I was diagnosed in 2001 as "ADHD with Asperger's Traits". It was not possible to be diagnosed "ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome" in 2001, as the conditions were considered mutually exclusive. If I wanted medication for ADHD, I needed that formal diagnosis and could not also be formally diagnosed Autistic. Anyone before about 2012 (I think) who was diagnosed ADHD would not also have been diagnosed as Autistic and vice versa. Now, you can be both, so is it any wonder that rates of both have gone up, as the two conditions are very often co-occurring. And that's just one factor involved in the increase.

  • suspect there would have been a mafia type discussion of "give us a handout or we blame you" that didn't work so they used the classic mob tactics of performing a hit on the company which also played to their conspiracy theory audience.

Hmm … that doesn’t surprise me. He has often used threatening tactics in public so I can quite imagine how much worse his behaviour might be when out of sight of the camera.

I have tried to access the Independent a few times in the past, but it has always required payment or acceptance of cookies and tracking.

  • I suspect the Tylenol claim is an attempt to appease his supporters

I did see an article in my news feed from the Independent (I'm not a regular reader of this newspaper, I just get autism articles and the Independent seems to have lots of these) that JFK Jr

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-tylenol-autism-rfk-meeting-b2833660.html

JFK Jr met with the CEO of Tylenol following his claim he would find "cause" of autism by September (he did not find anthing) and wanted someone to blame so chose to single out Tylenol.

Finding a "villan" to blame everything on is a common tactic used by the administration.

I suspect there would have been a mafia type discussion of "give us a handout or we blame you" that didn't work so they used the classic mob tactics of performing a hit on the company which also played to their conspiracy theory audience.

The article seems to be behind a paywal sometimes but not on a later attempt - I don't know what it is up to.

  • I think we’ve both successfully demonstrated how we could easily be the ‘greatest presidents of all time’! It’s all so easy to rattle off stuff like this, rather than work hard for the benefit of all the people of America and of the world. The only thing stopping us is we have have high ethical standards.

  • From what I remember paracetamol weren't that available in the UK, until the mid 1970's, or maybe people wre just used to taking aspirin and didn't see the need to change?

  • Also this might cover the increase in autism -

    Evolutionary Theory

As-well as people in the past were diagnosed far less then today, so maybe the numbers have always been the same percent plus more people alive today then in 1950s! so many reasons

  • I didnt know the years, that is great info. I get that is does not make much sense indeed.

Unless the increase starts around 1955, and increases in a very correlated way with tylenol.

But it is certainly not the cause since it appears afterwards.

    Thanks!

  • And to back up that claim, since tylenol isnt the cause, just remove access to assessments, and then, any financial support. "We are gonna save a lotta money -at the cost of lives."

  • I don’t think Trump is interested in evidence or facts. I suspect the Tylenol claim is an attempt to appease his supporters who hate people who aren’t non-autistic, white, male, American etc. His claim of a breakthrough discovery of Tylenol ‘causing the epidemic of autism’ is a not so subtle way to control women by telling them what to do, but it is mainly about boosting his ego by diminishing the value of autistic people and promoting himself as ‘the greatest president of all time’.

  • yea, not going to read it in my current mental state, thanks for the warning! but like anything named for the first time there would need to be many many individuals exhibiting these traits long before it was named! I'm just in shock that Trump fartie face research crew couldn't do basic google searchs like this for dates!

  • Just for interest:

Although I have only read part of the book (published in 1802), I've found it referred to as one of the earliest printed description of a individual exhibiting autistic traits:

    https://wellcomecollection.org/works/yaqhvngx

TRIGGER WARNING - the language used in historical documents such as the one above are offensive (in modern terms).

  • Even President (for life) Donald J. Trump isn't claiming that Tylenol is the only cause of Autism. He is just wrongly claiming that Tylenol is a cause of Autism and wants people to believe that Tylenol is behind the rise in Autism diagnoses over the last 20 years—his so-called "epidemic". And because he knows he is wrong, he has also dusted off and reiterated the old, discredited vaccine myth as another cause of Autism, just to cover his bases. Why be simply wrong when you can be wrong in style?!

  • I know! but my point is the 44 year gap! as in 44 years in the future Tylenol caused autism 44 years in the past! like time travel much! but we all know time travel dose not exist!

  • I think the powers that be are claiming that Tylenol is partly to blame for their recent "autism epidemic". It isn't, of course. There is no epidemic and Tylenol doesn't cause autism.
