Tylenol vs Autism Discovery Dates

After a quick google search from a uneducated autistic guy ( me ), i found that Tylenol was introduced in 1955 and Autism Discovery was 1911, this is quite a shocking discovery since the only way Tylenol could cause autism is if "TIME TRAVEL" was invented! but after some research i couldn't find any time machines.... so either I'm bad at googling/research and a time machine exists or the people who think the above is connected to Autism are dumber then a uneducated person like myself! ( only spend 15 mins researching as-well )

Tylenol was introduced in 1955 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tylenol_%28brand%29

Autism Discovery: The term "autism" was first introduced in 1911 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_autism

Edit : Also - The MMR vaccine was introduced in 1963 - en.wikipedia.org/.../MMR_vaccine

  • I didnt know the years, that is great info. I get that is does not make much sense indeed.

Unless the increase starts around 1955, and increases in a very correlated way with tylenol.

But it is certainly not the cause since it appears afterwards.

    Thanks!

The big increase started around 2000 (or the late 1990s). The reasons are down to a changes in the definition of Autism in the diagnostic manuals, greater awareness of the condition (e.g., it's not only for white boys), easier access to diagnosis, latelings like us figuring it out for ourselves and getting diagnosed, etc., etc.

In my own case, for example, I was diagnosed in 2001 as "ADHD with Asperger's Traits". It was not possible to be diagnosed "ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome" in 2001, as the conditions were considered mutually exclusive. If I wanted medication for ADHD, I needed that formal diagnosis and could not also be formally diagnosed Autistic. Anyone before about 2012 (I think) who was diagnosed ADHD would not also have been diagnosed as Autistic and vice versa. Now, you can be both, so is it any wonder that rates of both have gone up, as the two conditions are very often co-occurring. And that's just one factor involved in the increase.
