Skin removal

Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum

I wanted to ask if anyone has been through this

My son is 19 and was diagnosed with autism at 10 years old .

When he was 12 he started putting on a lot of weight.

When he was 16 he was 23 stone because he has been socially isolated for years and now he seems to have turned things around he lost 8 stone which was extremely difficult.

But he managed it and is now going to the gym but now has been left with excess skin which is getting him really down to the point of suicide.

He hates the way he looks

It's just another thing for him to cope with it's never ending he sorts one thing and then a whole load of new problems arise.

He needs to get surgery to remove the excess skin but it costs £9000

We don't have that kind of money and was wondering if anyone has been through the same thing and how they got help maybe tomorrow a charity or something.

I would appreciate any help as my son is getting extremely suicidal

And doesn't want to live like this anymore

Please can anyone help

Kind regards

  • If you are in the UK, most ICB's would not fund skin removal as it is considered to be cosmetic surgery - as no doubt you've been advised.

There are plenty of other surgeries - considered to be unnecessary - that they wont fund too - and we could debate the ethics of what they do and don't fund for all eternity.

I do know that some GPs will make referrals for surgery for some procedures that would normally be considered cosmetic, but that may well be dependent on their ICB, the circumstance of the individual, and the cost involved.

The NHS does still carry out these procedures, and one of the rules of thumb is that the patient needs to have lost a certain amount of their body weight in order to be considered (50%)

I don't know of any specific charity that would offer financial aid, but I suggest you speak with your GP and find out what the specific current parameters are in your area.
