Finances

Does anyone else have trouble with finances or money management? I feel like so many people understand how money works and how to make it work for them, however, it feels like such a foreign concept to me. Also, curious to know what kind of support or resources tools that are available because this is an area, I feel like I am drowning or not doing very well. I am highly creative person and have plenty of "ideas", however, the business management or creating a source of income or business with these ideas feel like such a foreign language.

  • I don’t have many tips as this is something I struggle with as well. Recently I made up my mind and said to myself I need to start organising my finances more for future stuff. I‘m starting small as I know money and numbers aren’t strengths of mine. I‘m starting by setting myself an amount of my wage I have to save each month. It’s a small step but I have kept to it since October. May seem small but progress is progress and I’m proud of myself !!

  • I have always struggled with anything number related. It was only in the last few years that I was made aware of dyscalculia which is the numerical equivalent of dyslexia. Having taken a test, I was informed it was so no understand why I struggle. I save and look in to things before making a purchase. I have no spend days and stick to my budget as best I can.

  • I don't have any trouble managing my own money, but I'm risk averse so never wanted to dabble in investments or business management, I preferred to work for an employer and pay tax and NI through PAYE so there was no need to do tax returns.

I do try to get the best interest rate on savings, I shop around for the best deals for utilities and insurance, and I have a credit card which is paid off in full every month so I never pay interest. I use the Money Saving Website for tips (I get an email every week)

  • To the OP.

My apologies for degenerating this thread into a discussion of gnomes.

The link that  has posted below looks useful.

Also, sites like Money Saving Expert might be helpful for particular issues.

I've never been able to do this beyond a hobby that brings in a little cash now and again.

  • I have a donsy (thank you internet) of gnomes.

    Brilliant.

A new collective noun (because gnomes do of course exist).

  • No. I have a donsy (thank you internet) of gnomes.

  • One way = delegation.

Do you have a tribe of trolls to give all your odd jobs to?

  • I think that deserves a thread of it's own ....

    Do it!

Keeping life simple. One way = delegation.

Speaking otherwise I may divulge my personal affairs.

  • Keeping life simple helps.

    How do you do that?

    Move to another planet?

I think that deserves a thread of its own ....

  • Personal "adulting" can often be a challenge to neurodivergent people for many reasons. You are definitely not on your own with this one!! I do not know what tools are available. Keeping life simple helps.

  • Being 50 I started to realise where money comes from, and styarted to have modest savings. I have even invested in some low risk fund.

As myself I would keep buying fountain pens and watches on end, each time I had some surplus money. I try not to do it

  • I can’t really comment on support resources, but this is one area where autism has actually helped me, in two ways.

Firstly, my parents instilled a saving habit in me and as a result I get quite anxious about money and saving and budgeting - so I have to do it!

Secondly, after the financial crisis back in 2008, finance became a special interest of mine. So I now invest frequently, learned everything about pensions, frequently change savings accounts and have lots of spreadsheets tracking and planning my finances.

I learned all this by reading a lot of books and now via financial websites and even some YouTube channels.
