GP Blues

Just wondering if anyone else  with autism has any issues/problems with contacting the GP now.  In my area its phone consultations only initially and it sometimes causes me stress.   I miss the old face to face contact.    On mentioning the fact that I had Aspergers I was met by silence.

  • thanks for that.   yes,  I did have a NHS diagnosis, so any GP will know!

  • They have now.  And I used it to check my blood test results.  I couldn't get through by phone the lines are too busy.

  • i think if its a NHS diagnosis, then yes it will be put in your record.... private? im not so sure. but any diagnosis NHS gives you theyd have on record.

  • not as far as I know,  its just phone consultations first in my doctors, then who knows.  I am still for the old system of going into see the doctor.    Does anyone know if an autism diagnosis is put on your medical records?

  • does your local gp not have a online "ask my gp" feature where you can fill in a descriptive form online which goes through to them like a chat box system that they can deal with any time?

  • The danger of saying Aspergers!

If people don't ask or don't know, don't tell them.

I remember a post here, many years ago, where someone was describing their experience of their social worker, how she was friendly, cheerful, very helpful.  Until he told her he had Aspergers, He never saw her again.

As for GPs appointments, we are all having problems with them, before this silly virus I had to wait two weeks to see a GP.  Now it's telephone consultation only.

  • although i dont like them phoning you back when you clearly clicked on the button that says you prefer to be emailed back instead of phoned. i find it hard to understand people over phone, not sure if their phone is crap or my mobile has a bad speaker or maybe my ear is crap lol but their accent doesnt help it either.

  • i find it better... i hated having to go in and then wait in a waiting room for 4 hours among contagious coughing people only to be blown off by the GP in seconds when you see them as they make out whatever you went in for is nothing or come back when it gets infected or whatever.

i prefer the new ask my gp system, usually i wouldnt see GP for anything with how it becomes a waste of time but with the online system i can clear off a whole load of stuff and even send photos and describe it better and it takes away the annoyance of waiting and being blown off and takes away the anxiety of having to meet a doctor and figure out how to structure what you wanna say. so much easier online.

  • I'm  glad its not just me who is having problems with GP consultations now.    I also dont know which doctor will call back and it can  cause stress.   I wonder does  a diagnosis of autism show on people's  medical records?

  • I rang my GP first thing in the morning and explained I was having a mental health crisis and they said someone would ring me and they didn't call until late evening. I called yesterday and finally managed to ask the receptionist for a GP appointment to discuss my mental health/potential diagnosis and was told I have to wait three weeks for a phone consultation, and when I said I would like an autism assessment the receptionist said I'd be waiting a long time for that too. I hate phone consultations because I can't understand what I'm being told, I can't concentrate to write it down, I can't answer questions fast enough, and I never know which doctor will call. At least in person I can ask for clarification or for things to be written down.
