New here, awaiting a referal

Hello,

My 4 year old has been recently diagnosed with hypermobility characteristics. The physiotherapists asked what he was like at school, as many autistic children have hypermobility syndrome.

I filled her in on what he was like, and she has referred him to a pediatrician, they have written to the school, and they have sent a report back on Matthew, so we are now waiting for an appt.

He has been going to nursery for over a year, where he will not talk or play with any other children. He tends to stand back and watch the other children, rather than join in.

He often cries in school, and gets very upset if there is any change to routine. I am very nervous about his assessment, and don't know what to expect.

Any advice, or what to expect next would be great,

thanks

Sue

  • Hi Sue

My son is 3.5 and was diagnosed last year. He is very hypermobile in all joints so was delayed in gross motor skills and had physio for a long time as he's only been walking for a year. I mentioned to physio about how quiet he was and other strange traits plus no sounds at all and she got me referred to Childrens Health and then they to a paed who gave the diagnosis of autism. We are at last having a follow up appt next week but its been a very long wait but I will be pleased to have this. I was lucky as had a  quick diagnosis and have been well supported by Early Years who helped him communicate with picture cards. He starts preschool in a couple of months as feel I have to try (although been going to childminder for 2 years), its such a worry I know howyou feel. I have also started receiving disability allowance for him, the form is a bit daunting but there is good advice on NAS on how to fill it out and they have recently revised it to make it easier. Franks mum is right, once you have the appointment over whatever the outcome hopefully you will feel better. Good luck

  • Hello,

Thanks for the reply, trying to not sound totally in the dark, but what is a statement? and will I be entitled to benefits, he will be starting full time school in September, and I am so nervous for him. The thought of him having to go into the hall for dinners, I know will scare him.

  • Hi Sue,

AS having just gone through the assessment process for the 2nd time I hope my experience will help.

With my son he was referred to the hospital paediatrician who observed him during a session and we were asked to fill out a form about his behaviour.  She didnt touch or examine him at all and were given a Dx very quickly after that.  As your DS is pre school I would hope you would get a speedy outcome and then informed if he needs a statement for starting school and DLA entitlement etc.

Please dont be worried or feel alone, its natural to feel so.  I found the parent to parent line very helpful as you can talk to other experienced parents who have been through this before.

Good luck its the not knowing thats worrying not the outcome
