New here, awaiting a referal

Hello,

My 4 year old has been recently diagnosed with hypermobility characteristics. The physiotherapists asked what he was like at school, as many autistic children have hypermobility syndrome.

I filled her in on what he was like, and she has referred him to a pediatrician, they have written to the school, and they have sent a report back on Matthew, so we are now waiting for an appt.

He has been going to nursery for over a year, where he will not talk or play with any other children. He tends to stand back and watch the other children, rather than join in.

He often cries in school, and gets very upset if there is any change to routine. I am very nervous about his assessment, and don't know what to expect.

Any advice, or what to expect next would be great,

thanks

Sue

  • Hi Sue,

AS having just gone through the assessment process for the 2nd time I hope my experience will help.

With my son he was referred to the hospital paediatrician who observed him during a session and we were asked to fill out a form about his behaviour.  She didnt touch or examine him at all and were given a Dx very quickly after that.  As your DS is pre school I would hope you would get a speedy outcome and then informed if he needs a statement for starting school and DLA entitlement etc.

Please dont be worried or feel alone, its natural to feel so.  I found the parent to parent line very helpful as you can talk to other experienced parents who have been through this before.

Good luck its the not knowing thats worrying not the outcome
