Wow!  That sounds excellent.  I'm definitely going to ask!  I'm really interested in this kind of stuff. 

(NB Many years ago I was the new mother who, as well as being interested in the baby, asked to see and touch the placenta on both sides because I was so curious).

Jenny, I have at least one MRI of the Head each year (nothing to do with autism).

This is my experience:   With the NHS, if you want the scan on a disc you just ask your neuro. The last time I asked - about ten years ago now - I had to pay £10 and sign a form. They then posted the scan to me on a DVD along with the right software to view it.  A day or two later,  they sent me the password needed to open it.

It is fascinating, you can travel through your brain in different directions at any speed you like. Of course, If there is anything of concern your neuro will have already discussed it with you.

My liver scans are certainly horrific but I still found them fascinating because they revealed full structures which I could only partially palpate from the outside.  Sort of, "Oh!  Now I can see why that bit hurts so much!" and "Now I can see why my bowels are getting a bit dicky under the weight of all that!" 

i got the images of my pinned broken thumb --- but they where more horrific than cool

Yes, I've certainly found this.  I have a systemic, progressive disease affecting my kidneys and liver but also possibly my heart, brain and other organs.  So far I've seen a geneticist, a nephrologist, a hepatologist and a neurologist (plus probably others over the years - e.g the risk for bowel cancer is also higher so I needed to be screened for that) but there's no dedicated service to bring it all together.  Not had an endocrinologist though.  :)

If you go private, you get the full scan results on a DVD - and it comes with software for you to view your brain in a rotatable 3d image and zoom in and out to have a good dig around.. 

Have you been through the endocrine specialists?   

Lots of things are linked together - the problem with the NHS is it's too difficult to get an overview - each specialist only does their own thing and there's no holistic approach.

go for it ---- ask for the images then u can get them put on a t-shirt which u can wear with "this is the real me" written above one of them

I am basically a patient who asks loads of questions and, with my liver and kidney MRI scan, I had to ask more than once before getting the actual report from the scan.  I also like to see the actual pictures and to get these I had to wait until my next appointment, ask quite pointedly and only then did the very obliging consultant allow me to take pictures of what was appearing on his screen.  All my information, of course, so I felt entitled to it.  I wish they'd automatically give a full report but I suppose there will be patients who could freak out over it.    

I've actually already had the scan just a few days ago as I have a liver/kidney condition which can be associated with aneurysms.  I was just wondering what else might be revealed and whether they'd even tell me if they found anything different but obviously benign.  

Thanks Aidie, I will.  I do find it really interesting and, since it was a full scan, it seems a shame not to ask for anything else which might be revealed.    

I doubt your gp will just send you for an MRI on a whim.      You can pay for a private scan - probably around £1000 inc. neurologist consultation.

Best value might be one of those full body diagnostic MRI scans that are used to frighten you into buying lots of private healthcare insurance - they are normally around £500 and come with a comprehensive and scary report about everything in your body - not just your brain.

ask your GP  if your brain could be checked  for any unusual morphology

I don't really believe there's anything wrong with me (although a lot of bad things have happened, many to do with my unidentified neurodivergence), just that, as a GP once put it, I am "calibrated differently".  Plus, being late-diagnosed, I'm especially concerned about things being knowable but, for one reason or another, hidden from me.  I generally like to know as much as possible, even if there's no direct or immediate application for that knowledge, because you never really know whether it might become important at a future date (for other family members as well as myself) plus I find it useful to have an explanation.  e.g. If my brain is actually different, this might account for the failure of various types of therapy which many find helpful. 

Of course, I might draw a blank but even that is useful because it'd rule out an explanation that pops into my head every so often and wastes my time (like so many things in the past when for example, I though I was just an introvert or a "highly sensitive person). 

So, although I see what you mean and I know I'm not going to get 100% clarity, I think that bit of knowledge might inch me towards the truth, which to my mind is always worth having.
