Feeling ill after Meltdown

Yesterday evening, after a particularly difficult day I had a meltdown. I spent about 45 minutes crying rather hysterically until I could calm down and afterwards I was exhausted and went to bed. I don't sleep well at the best of times anyway and this morning I woke up with an awful headache, feeling sick and very drowsy.

Does anyone else notice that they feel ill after a meltdown?

  • Hi Skybird

It takes me a long time to recover from a meltdown. I am always exhausted afterwards. It took me about 5 hours to recover from the last one. I couldn't concentrate or focus on anything and I felt unwell. I sat on the sofa under blanket.

  • Hi

On that note from Majorie I was having a particalry hard day for me on Friday. I coun't understand why was feeling so rubbish. Come back from the doctors today with 100 paracetamol with them saying my temperature is up. I have had cold for four weeks and lingurered because I also been on prednislone for a blood dissorder. Sometimes we can truely have a difficult day and it because our bodies are coping with illness too. It can be too much sometimes.  And a little cry can be good as it releases tension. Seems like my hardish day on Friday could be due to body coping with being ill too.

  • Hi Skybird, you could just be ill and not coping so well because of that, hence the big meltdown. I find it quite difficult to identify when I am physically ill, sometimes. I know it sounds a little crazy, but when I was working, sometimes I used to get up and go to work and only realise that I was physically ill, when I found that I could not work.

Either way, you should, perhaps take a few days rest and recover, before you resume normal life. Whether your problem is physical or emotional, a good rest will help.

When I feel bad, for whatever reason, I go into what I call "self preservation mode". I take time out to rest and be kind to myself.

I hope you feel better. Smile

  • For anyone, crying itself can,  but crying hysterically for 45 minutes will more than likely trigger any headache and yes it can have the undesired effect of feeling sick with it too. I think that is fairly normal.

  • Strong emotions can really drain you, and certainly upset your stomach.

  • Hi, I'm not autistic, but have felt physically and emotionally unwell after something traumatic has happened.  Body + mind are not separate.  Think of people who get an upset stomach when they are nervous, for example.  The stomach produces more acid, which can lead to nausea.  Think of stress induced headache.  Lack of sleep can be debilitating.
