Anger Issues

So, is it just me, or is everyone else having anger issues lately too?

I’ve realised that when I get angry or upset, I tend to freak out and become really overwhelmed by my emotions. I’m pretty sure this might have something to do with autism, even though I haven’t been officially diagnosed. I know that some autistic people struggle with emotional regulation, but I’m not 100% sure if that’s what’s happening with me.

I get upset really quickly, especially when someone attacks me personally or says something that hurts me. It’s even harder when it happens with my family, because I seem to get even more emotional, and afterwards, I end up feeling really guilty about how I reacted.

I don’t know if anyone else experiences this, but sometimes it feels like my emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds, and it’s so hard to calm myself down once I’m upset.

Does anyone else feel this way or struggle with something similar? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences and knowing I’m not alone in this. Heart️ Thanks!

  • Yeah its hard for me to say as i havent been dignosed with ADHD,OCD,BPD, or autism So its hard to say what is actually can and cant be (Again havent been dignosed yet) But i did a test screening just as i wait to make a appoiment and it says Most Likely to have Autism

Autism can cause emotional regulation issues and the number of stressors in our day to day lives can cause some autists to suffer a lot with anger issues.

There is a good article that explains it better than I can here:

    https://www.autism360.com/autism-and-anger/

It talks about coping strategies in the moment but more importantly, long term management by building much better emotional understanding and regulation.

I used to have issues with this and working with a therapist who really understood autism helped me build a better connection to my emotions which has allowed me to experience a much wider range of emotions in a more normal way and have a richer life as a consequence.

One warning - it also made me susceptible to cry in the sad bits of films when the loving family dog stepped on a landmine to save little Timmy (well, you get the general idea) but it feels much better for having done that. If you have a strong sense that this is undesirable then it is worth considering that it may not be suitable for you.

  • I also do a similar thing to you, getting into an anxious state, frequently due to a new issue that cannot be resolved in the immediate future i.e. hours not days. It feels like being an overwound spring.
Although I can get angry, it is often a product of trying very hard not to become angry, if that makes any sense.
I suspect that some of it maybe related to my newly found alexithymia.

  • I work in retail, so I get asked a lot of dumb questions on a daily basis. It’s not the best place for me to work because of my own struggles, but at the end of the day, it’s a job. But yeah, I totally get what you’re saying. Most of the time, when I’m in the car with someone and something happens, like someone not indicating or overtaking at high speeds, I’ll immediately think, “What an idiot,” even though I’m not even the one driving. Joy

  • Today I could barely get into the local car park because of the number of cars double parked, some waiting for other people to leave, only people couldn't leave because others were in the way.

I don't have road rage, but I do get road irritation.

I think a lot of my anger comes, like you say from people asking stupid questions, but also people being unable to answer a question, not because its a bad question or an unreasonable one, but because it has to be prefaced with a load of waffle and sales talk and if I ask the questions again, because I've had a totally different question to the one I asked answered, thats me being aggressive apparently, I really don't understand it.

Now this is truly stupid; a guy my son used to work with genuinely thought that Rome was an invention of Hollywood and that all authors, games creators etc had gone along with it, as well as the heritage places. So the Roman baths in Bath are an invention and I've no idea what he thought the City of Rome is or was in Italy, maybe h thought the Italian government were in on too?

  • Yeah i have anger issues but if also know it can be some what a part of Autism and ADHD but i thought it was something Diffrent

Also the people getting stupider is 100% correct like in work you get the most stupidest Questions asked and im like..... its write here man.

  • I get that sort of thing and call it rage, I thought it was a post menopausal thing, where I've just got less tolerant of intolerance as I've got older.

Plus I think other people have got more entitled and stupid over the last 10 years or so.

  • Exactly, it is really annoying.

  • sometimes it feels like my emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds, and it’s so hard to calm myself down once I’m upset.

Yep, I get that. It's rarely something I can label anger, though. Mostly it seems to be anxiety over something that's hit me out of the blue. Once I'm in that state, it's hard to get back to normal, especially if the cause remains unresolved.
