Anger Issues

So, is it just me, or is everyone else having anger issues lately too?

I’ve realised that when I get angry or upset, I tend to freak out and become really overwhelmed by my emotions. I’m pretty sure this might have something to do with autism, even though I haven’t been officially diagnosed. I know that some autistic people struggle with emotional regulation, but I’m not 100% sure if that’s what’s happening with me.

I get upset really quickly, especially when someone attacks me personally or says something that hurts me. It’s even harder when it happens with my family, because I seem to get even more emotional, and afterwards, I end up feeling really guilty about how I reacted.

I don’t know if anyone else experiences this, but sometimes it feels like my emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds, and it’s so hard to calm myself down once I’m upset.

Does anyone else feel this way or struggle with something similar? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences and knowing I’m not alone in this. Heart️ Thanks!

  • I’ve realised that when I get angry or upset, I tend to freak out and become really overwhelmed by my emotions

Autism can cause emotional regulation issues and the number of stressors in our day to day lives can cause some autists to suffer a lot with anger issues.

There is a good article that explains it better than I can here:

    https://www.autism360.com/autism-and-anger/

It talks about coping strategies in the moment but more importantly, long term management by building much better emotional understanding and regulation.

I used to have issues with this and working with a therapist who really understood autism helped me build a better connection to my emotions which has allowed me to experience a much wider range of emotions in a more normal way and have a richer life as a consequence.

One warning - it also made me susceptible to cry in the sad bits of films when the loving family dog stepped on a landmine to save little Timmy (well, you get the general idea) but it feels much better for having done that. If you have a strong sense that this is undesirable then it is worth considering that it may not be suitable for you.
