Can you request a job coach change in a non-dwp employment scheme?

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

My job coach, not a dwp one, and I have not really been able to build a rapport and she is not great at using computers or finding employment. I just don't feel comfortable telling her my medical information and needs.

I had sent off an email on Thursday to the relevant manager and today I got a response saying that she will be informed as she had no idea about my issues with her! I don't want her as I feel very unsupported by her, let alone told that I made a complaint about her!

For reference I have never replaced any support worker or job coach before. My previous job coach I had for over a year until my time at the hospital came to an end and before that I had two rounds of adult social care support from a gentleman who was fantastic which lasted for over a year too.

However I am really struggling with this job coach and feel I am putting in all the work in what is supposed to be "support into work",

  • What do you get the job coach through? Just as you mention them not being DWP. It's not an area that I have a lot of experience in but I know that you can get Neurodivergence coaching through access to work and you can find someone that suits you. I'm wondering if you could find someone that would be more suitable for you and has expertise in helping people find employment? I think there's quite long waits with access to work now but might be worth a try?

  • It's a council run programme to get people into work, I don't even think you need to be autistic or anything to use it either. The DWP do send some of their clients there too if I am correct.

To be fair they were pretty speedy getting me in here, my only issue other than the job coach is getting responses via email can be a nightmare but that is common place across the public and private sectors now.

Thank you for that, I did not know Pathways to work funded that

  • You could contact the people than run the programme and ask whether you could change person. I don't know whether they will for a free programme but I think you're entitled to express your concerns.

It's worth looking into as an option as you are able to find someone you are happy to work with. You wouldn't necessarily have to find anything autism specific but someone with awareness might be helpful. You'd at least have a back up option then if needed.
