At 40 i started year with referaal for autism assesment now i wait

Hi

I am on a waiting list for autism referal will be 3 years plus befkre i will be seen, but i am now feeling crushed with the wait . I only realised the issues i had my whole life with issues with socilizing sound light and anxity being called very shy and quiet child but very bright  coupled with always feeling like i was in fight or flight with the world could be autism. Now that i have responsibiltys of a adult all these things i just asummed was just life and everyone delt with it i cant deal with aswell anymore and anxity can explode over small things ro other people that go wrong but to me consume every second.

I just need to know am i autistic or just going mad

  • Hi, I also have this uncertainty going on, am I autistic or is it something else. Or I'm just inferior to others. Hearing my whole life that im wrong, I just need to try harder, when others made things with much less effort made me grow up with this low self esteem. I have my assessment in autumn this year- October/November. My therapist says he would be amazed if I turned out to not be autistic. But everything is possible. I wish you that it all goes smoothly.

  •  Hi JJJJ,

Sorry to hear you have been waiting such a long time for your assessment. That sounds very difficult, especially when you’re trying to make sense of experiences you’ve carried throughout your life while also managing the pressures and responsibilities of adulthood.

Our website has a diagnosis hub, this includes information, practical and multimedia resources to support autistic people and their families before during and after diagnosis.

You may want to visit the other resources on our website, we have advice and guidance on a wide range of information about autism, socialising and relationships, communication and education: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance

You can try searching on our Autism Services Directory for diagnostic services in your local area.  The Directory also includes listings for support and social groups for autistic people, their families and friends.

You may also like to have a look at the mental health section of our website which has useful links to information and advice about a range of mental health issues: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/mental-health

  • have you looked at right to choose (RTC) if you are in England - that will cut the wait significantly

  • I have been on the list nearly 4 years and managed to get an appointment due to a cancellation a little earlier, I was told I was near the top of the list and that the appointment would have been in August.

It is sometimes worth asking about being able to be considered for any appointments where someone has cancelled
