Disturbance from drones

I have just seen on the news that distribution of deliveries by drone are extending to another area. I don't think they could ever do it where I live because they might drop in the wrong garden. However as there is countryside nearby they could fly over. I imagine it could be worse if you moved to live somewhere quiet in the countryside.

What do others think?

  • I just saw it on the news, how do they ensure your parcel isn't damaged by being dropped from that height?

What if it gets dropped in a puddle or something worse?

  • I don't understand how it would be possible to safeguard against wildlife mammals, pets, or young children potentially gaining access to the maybe harmful contents of these 5 lb / 2 kg parcels.

  • People think the countryside is quiet, it's not, here for example you have an RAF base with planes taking off and landing all day.

Both wild and farm animals can make a hell of a noise, often at odd times of day, having a rookery nearby is really noisy, in spring if you live near sheep you will hear lambs and ewes constantly calling each other day and night. Then there's farm machinery, farmers regualarly work late into the evening/night to get hay in.

I can understand the concerns I'm not sure I'd like it either, it would depend on how big the drones are, I can see that they spook a lot of animals which could be dangerous, if young cattle start stampeding or ewes miscarry their lambs. I don't think they have the battery life to deliver here, thatsd one pluse point about the countryside, the distances from depot to customer.

  • This morning I saw the BBC story about Amazon using drones.

I don't like the buzzing noise as will be disturbing. I suffer from tinnitus. Slightest noise triggers anxiety.

Drones over a certain weight need to have a licence and pass a theory/practical test. The technology could be hacked into.

Supposed the parcel dropped on a trampoline and bounced in the neighbours garden?

Supposed the parcel dropped into a pond?

What about data protection? Will be deleted afterwards or a certain period e.g 21 days?

    What about breakages or leaks?

Supposed it was dropped at the wrong address?

    Used to shop from amazon.

  • what if the products inside packages break on impact

  • I think it would feel like living in a dystopian film if there were constantly drones flying round with parcels.

Drones are surprisingly loud and I find their buzzing quite freaky.

I'm sure they would be designed very cleverly, but I'd still be worried about them crashing into each other, or falling out of the sky and causing injury/damage - if they carried multiple parcels I imagine they would get to be quite big and heavy.

You'd think the environmental impact of drone deliveries in terms of carbon would be better, and it could be more reliable (less human error or traffic delays etc). Though they might reduce the number of jobs for delivery drivers. I used to quite like seeing the postman when I was at home during the day.

  • Yes you make good points. The noise disturbance could be an issue and a good point too about wildlife. The demonstration on the news showed a parcel dropping from a height. It might avoid objects in flight, but what about on the drop.

There is also the noise issue if the distribution centre is near your home, probably the buzzing would be more annoying than vans.

Proof of delivery is a good point too as people often put pictures on social media asking if they recognise the door where their parcel was delivered.

Then there is the possibility of a malfunctioning drone.

  • I don't think I'm too keen, but I don't know the details. Things it makes me wonder about:

    • Thieves already steal parcels from doorsteps, will it make it easier to see who to steal from? (some items come in their own packaging) How will they stop this?
    • Will they be taking video footage for 'proof of delivery', so buzzing annoying drones zipping everywhere and filming it? Privacy nightmare?
    • The effect on wildlife? Will garden bird numbers dip if they keep being scared away by drones? Has their been a study done in the first pilot area to see? These trials should be made to assess all impacts, not just if it saves them money.
    • Health and wellbeing? If you have a neighbour constantly getting drone delivieries, would the buzzing create a noisier enviroment?
