NHS Employment Help

I saw the mental health nurse the other day and she offered to refer me to the local NHS' employment service. I was aware that they had these services, but there isn't much information about them on the internet. So I was just wondering if anyone here has used one?

Apparently they are part of local talking therapies services and can help people with long term illnesses to find jobs and also stay in work for those who already have a job.

  • yes have used but seemed to be 2 short phone calls - and once i told them I'd done what they asked me to do "ask Occupational Health to discuss reasonable adjustments" I was then signed off the service - so I think they have limited capacity to do much

Yes I was referred via Talking Therapies - and they did say I could self-refer back if needed.

TBH my Occ Health was via an outsourced provider and wasnt great 1 short 90 min conversation over 4 months ago and a very medicalized report for HR and I've heard nothing since - so not sure I got what I requested.  Until my bonus for last year is paid is April I'm not chasing anyone

I'm awaiting Access to Work support - which is a min of 30 wks wait at the moment - and have heard reports of funding being cut - so will have to see what that provides.

How about your union - have you approached them ? I would have though they are your best bet

  • Thanks, its sounds a bit like that. We never used to have much in the way of employment advisers outside of the "Job Centre", which despite its name, is where you go to get benefits, rather than look for work. But in the last few years we've seen NHS organisations run back-to-work schemes, as well as local councils and mayoral authorities.

  • I don't know about the rest of the UK, but it looks like most areas in England have these advisers in their Talking Therapies service.

  • Via Council’s occupational therapy or autism services

  • I got referred onto this before Christmas, I got a call yesterday saying it was all linked to the jobcentre and nhs. I’m not hugely hopeful as a lot of this is just back to work training. I don’t need training, I’m professional I just need employment and someone to genuinely treat me like a human being.

  • Is this England only or does it exist in the rest of the UK?

  • Interesting! It sounds a lot like what I do for a job here in the States, but I don’t know much about NHS. If it is anything similar to my job, then some of the benefits they might be able to provide include:
    1) Discovering what you want to do for an occupation.
    2) Assist with finding and applying for jobs.
    3) Help with interview readiness and possibly even sit in an interview with you if needed.
    4) Check ins to see how the job is going.
    5) Connecting with the employer to assist with communication or training.
    6) Eventually fading services as you gain deeper independence in the workplace.

That’s basically a quick rundown of the services I provide for my clients. But things here in the United States might be different than what NHS is able to provide.
