Looking for friends as someone who is going through the assessment process

hey everyone, i am 28F and recently i was referred to a therapist who has referred me for an autism assessment, originally i was in therapy for bipolar/bpd but my therapist is certain its autism (although she cannot diagnose) which makes a lot of sense because ive always had a suspicion i was autistic. anyway, i have always struggled to make friends, i have a very healthy and stable relationship and adore spending time with him but i miss having friends. i have always found it easier to have friends online than in person. Sorry, i feel like im rambling here but needed to get my thoughts down haha.

i am into

  • crafting (i would say this is my safe place and special interest)
  • gaming (i mainly play switch and sometimes xbox)
  • reading

anyway sorry if i rambled Slight smile

  • Dear Amelia,

Welcome to the online community, it is great that you are here! I can see you have already had some great responses and I hope that makes you feel welcome here.

I have included a link to the NAS guidance on Making friends

You are not alone in finding having friends easier online than in person, I know some of our other members have a similar experience. I hope you are able to find some members on here that can connect with you!

I have also linked our guidance on Before diagnosis and Assessment and diagnosis - there may be some helpful information for you to take a look at whilst you are waiting for your referral to be picked up

    Best wishes,

    Olivia Mod

  • There are definitely a lot of options for different art styles on there, im also not that great at drawing i just find it relaxing haha Slight smile

  • I would love to do art on the iPad, I might look into that. I imagine you can do some very different styles of art on there. I like drawing but I’m not very good at it… my art is 3D.

  • Omg yes Mario sunshine and 64 are also great games! I haven’t completed them yet but they are super fun to play but quite hard for me as I find there seem to be a lot of different actions with different buttons but I suppose galaxy was the same but I knew that from the wii!

omg Elfilin is just such a little cutie and when I first played it and saw the ending I actually cried but when I saw the pics in the credits I cheered right up, he looked so cute coming through that portal to reunite with Kirby as the song plays.

Also, as you can probably tell, I have named myself after Fecto Elfilis and even used a pic of both Elfilis and Elfilin in the pic lol! Elfilis was just such a great boss I think and quite cool looking too.

  • I think you just do the end of the add on at the end of the levels, i dont remember having to go to the colosseum to do it. i love elfilin haha what a cutie. one of my favourite things is to collect all the little figures from the capsules, its very satisfying and then i display my favourite ones in my house. We also have 3D allstars, my favourite one is mario sunshine :) i remember playing it on the gamecube. Slight smile

  • Ahh I haven’t got to the end of the Kirby add on yet but I can imagine it to be super difficult lol. From what I’ve gathered do you have to go to the colosseum to fight the final boss of the add on? I can’t imagine it being easy either way. I’ve managed to complete world 3 of the add on but yet to unlock world 4 and when I complete world four I like to rescue elfilin asap lol

i am also looking forward to Mario galaxy 2 coming for the switch and it’s good that the first one is coming out again. I got lucky and managed to snag the 3d all stars but need galaxy 2 for switch especially as yoshi is in it

  • I have never played odyssey or galaxy but my partner is a big fan of galaxy and he is looking forward to the release of it on switch 2! and yes the add ons for switch 2 are very good! although (no spoilers as obviously i dont know how far in you are) the end of the add on for kirby is proving very difficult haha! and yes crafting is definitely very therapeutic i lose myself for hours just crafting away haha :)

  • Aww no problem we are so happy to have you here! Ahh I love Mario games, especially odyssey, kart and galaxy! Mario party jamboree is super fun too and I’m also loving the switch 2 add on! Same with the Kirby and forgotten land add on as well! Aww Simpsons hit and run is just a real great classic for me and I am so happy that I am still able to play it in 2025, despite the graphic not being as good as I thought (on ps2 anyway lol).

oooh your crafts sound super fun, I also do like a bit of everything but I mainly tend to do more cards for like birthdays or xmas or I will make things like felt characters or sequin art etc. it’s just such a therapeutic pass time if you ask me

  • Sex education was a great show! and thats good that you can take it with you sometimes :) i do digital drawings on my ipad a lot so i tend to carry that round with me incase something sparks my interest and i want to draw it :) thats super cool that youre making a jumper for yourself though! id love to see it when its done :) but i totally agree when it comes to crafting i wish there were more hours in the day. :)

  • I also really loved Sex Education, it made me laugh and cry and I loved so many of the characters. I have watched it a few times. Crochet was difficult to learn but now I have the hang of it it is so easy. I usually have a few projects going at a time, some of them I take when I go out and will sit in the park on a bench to do but some of the blankets are too big so I only do them at home. I’m making a jumper for myself at the moment and also have made one of a pair of socks. I wish there were more hours in the day.

  • Ah sorry i must have read the message wrong, good luck with the assessment when the time comes! im hoping mine will be sometime next year too. i totally understand what you mean about struggling to keep up with conversations in groups, i cant cope when its too many voices at once, i just end up hearing none of them haha. ah cool! i tried crochet but i found it too fiddly for me and i could never work out how to make it work, but that is lovely that you donate things to families in need :) i definitely recommend that book, and ive never read the secret garden, maybe ill check it out :) i also enjoyed the heartstopper series, my favourite series is either skins or the walking dead, although ive never been one to be big into TV series, im more of a movie person haha :)

  • I am waiting for my assessment, should be next year.  I also love chatting online as face to face I have some lovely friends but find it tiring and also struggle to keep up with conversations in groups (there is nothing wrong with my hearing though).  I am a knitter and a crocheter and make things to wear for myself and babies, which give to a charity who give to families in need. I love reading all types of books, I think I have the one you said but I haven’t read it yet. My favourite book is The secret garden, I have read it many many times since I was a child.  I also love the Heartstopper series.

  • Hello there Slight smile i like to make tshirts, bags and cards mainly but i also do like personalised items such as cups and mugs :) what about you? my favourite things to read tend to be young adult fictions, my favourite book i read recently was .they all die at the end. it was great :) what books do you like? and it sounds like weve had very similar experiences i also have had a life time of anxiety/depression/self harm. i find online chatting easier because i find in person i have to mask, where as online i have chance to be myself because i dont have that feeling of judgement :) always happy to chat and loving it here so far Slight smile definitely look into an assessment :)

  • Hi I am a reader and a crafter. What are the crafts you like and the type of books you like to read?
I am also in the process of assessment. My therapist suggested I could go for assessment. I have a life time of anxiety and intermittent depression and self harm. Despite having a relatively nice life I have always found things very difficult. I’m pretty sure I am autistic, I would definitely bet a bit of money that I am.
I love an online chat and always look on here at least every day. I hope you like it here smiling face with hearts

  • Hello! i also play a lot of mario games, mainly mario kart or mario party jamboree :) i also used to love simpsons hit and run! my main crafts i do are like tshirts, bags and cards:) but i find that i dabble in a bit of everything haha :) thankyou for being so welcoming, happy to be here! Slight smile

  • Hello and welcome! You haven’t rambled at all. As  has mentioned, we are also avid gamers for the switch! Also quite a few Xbox gamers here too! I have been playing loads of Kirby and Mario and Yoshi games lately but I also enjoy Simpsons hit and run which I own for ps2 and now laptop. I am also a fan of crafting. What do you do for crafts? I tend to make things based of games or characters! Glad you have you here!

  • I'll definitely check it out. i would say thats my favourite style (not sure if thats the right word) of gaming Slight smile

  • Totally get what you are saying about Violet. I spent a ridiculous amount of time just riding Miraidon around the roads on the west side. I haven’t heard of Shin Miraidon/Koraidon!

Breath of the Wild is really fun! You’ll especially like it if you enjoy the open world feel of Violet. If you play it, take your time; There’s no rush to dive into the later game. You start out on a sort of “tutorial island,” but you can take as long as you wish to complete it.

  • I definitely recommend the switch 2 if you get the chance to get one. I love playing pokemon violet because its thrilling yet calming all at the same time. i noticed they're bringing out a shin miraidon and koraidon soon but as im in the uk theres been no mention of release here yet which sucks. i havent played zelda in a really long time as i used the play the DS ones, my favourite is Zelda and the minish cap on gameboy, my partner and i recently got the switch 2 version of breath of the wild so maybe ill give that a go.

  • Pokémon Violet is fantastic. I play that a lot, and I’m currently working through Scarlet with my daughters.

My main game is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but I also dabble with Fire Emblem, Hitman (which barely plays on Switch lol), Skyrim, and the Zelda games.

I still haven’t invested in the Switch 2 yet, but I hope to someday.
