PIP renewal - when?

Does anyone know at what point people are contacted to go through the process of trying to renew their Personal Independence Payment?  Is it some months or weeks  before it runs out? And what do they do now - do they do in person interviews - or over the phone? Do they still visit people at home, or do you have to go somewhere for an appointment? If anyone has any helpful info about this I’d really appreciate you sharing it - because it’s been ages since my son last went through this (and we all found it incredibly stressful obviously). We’d like to know what to expect if possible. Thanks :)

  • The Department for Work and Pensions usually contacts people about 6 months before a fixed-term PIP award is due to end. This gives time to complete the reassessment process before the current award runs out.

If the end date is approaching and your son hasn’t been contacted by 3 months before, it’s worth calling them to check.

  • Hi Bunny - thanks so much for this information. I had no idea they could be contacting us a whole year before it ends - I am glad you have prepared me for that! I feel quite sick when letters like that turn up - we find it all so intimidating. This is why I’m trying to get us prepared for facing it by knowing what might happen. Thank you for your help.

  • Hello RachelO - thanks so much for sharing your experience- I really appreciate it. It’s good that you got through the process without the stress of an interview etc and I’m so happy for you that you had a positive outcome - that’s really wonderful. It’s such a relief isn’t it? Best wishes to you for the future.

  • Thanks for sharing this. That’s a big gap between your form and the interview isn’t it?! Do you mind if I ask how long before your current award expired did they contact you to start the process of renewing it? I really wish you luck! Pray

  • I had to put my review forms in as requested in May 2024. Last week I had 1.5 hour telephone review assessment. More than a year after they received my review form. I now need to wait 6 - 8 weeks for a decision. My conditions have actually worst since my first award in 2022.

  • Kate Kestrel I went through this recently and was contacted last year in September 2024 for renewal after being awarded it again in 2019. I was notified that I have been given the same award again to 2029. I didn't go through any interviews or phone calls and submitted just paperwork and medical latters and had a positive outcome. I used the links this post to complete my form and had a good result. They can do home visits, but they are not easy to get as I been that very frail eldery people in poor condition have to attend medical centres still in private transport. Good luck.

  • The letter that you received when your PIP claim was approved explains when your claim is due to end, and if it will be reviewed. In terms of the usual timing for this, Turn2us explains that:

"The DWP will usually start to review your claim one year before your award ends.

When the DWP reviews your claim, they send you a letter with a PIP review form. The DWP gives you 4 weeks to fill in the form and send it back. Ask the DWP for more time if you need it." (continues....)
